Fishing Report

Middle Fork Feather River Fly Fishing Report

Middle Fork Feather River Fly Fishing Report
I hope everyone had a good 4th of July! I took the week off and got to fish with a special friend that I use to race motocross against from 2001 to 2006. Just like racing moto, she is equally talented at fly fishing. On one of those days off, we revisited a very secret and rugged creek in the foothills I found several years ago that is not on any map, yet full of wild bows. What an awesome adventure that was! With summer in full swing, I must say that it has been unseasonably cool for the most part, and the weather has been as perfect as it gets. Flows are finally coming down for the most part, yet some watersheds are still a little high, but hey, that just means the dog days of summer may only be with us for a very short time. Lots of fly anglers out on the water and my phone has been ringing nonstop for late trip requests. You’ll see many guides like me advertising “Book Early” in February and March, and there is a good reason for that – I’m booked up for the next 4 weeks straight with limited days after that. Keep in mind I am a true ambassador for fly fishing and will always take the time to answer your questions, “Sharing the Knowledge” has been a part of my family’s mantra since the early 70’s – Like father, like son. Email is best to get a hold of me. So let’s get on with a report from the Northern Sierra and the waters I have been guiding, fishing, and executing missions of recon.

Middle Fork Feather River – Flows are perfect in the Graeagle area, and a tad high downstream of the Jamison Creek confluence. Water temps have been in the high 50’s to low 60’s. Downstream of snow melt feeder creeks the water temps will be bit colder for a ways, and vice versa, stretches of water downstream of long pools stringed together will have warmer temps due to solar radiation. There are lots of smaller rainbows which is great news for the future of the MFFR as long as they are not harvested. Active hatches include Golden Stones, midges (mostly in the early morning), caddis, crane flies, Yellow Sallies, little green stones, and any day now Sulpher mayflies in the evening. An angler will want to nymph in the early morning, and then switch to a dry dropper just before noon until evening, at which point the beautiful marriage of dry fly dreamin and the magic hour of last light end the day. Most of the larger trout are likely headed down to the canyon stretches but there may be a few around in the deeper pools, so don’t put away those streamers away quite yet. I have some upcoming trips in the next week so look for new intel on California’s first adopted Wild & Scenic river in the next report.

Deschutes Fly Fishing Report

Deschutes Fly Fishing Report
Caddis season in now here and in full affect. Look for back eddies and about any shady spot under trees and you will find fish rising. All you need 80% of the day is an Elk Hair Caddis or EC Caddis. Usually in the middle of the day the rising fish slow down for a few hours, if this happens get you nymph rod out and tie on some sort of caddis rock worm and a caddis emerger and this will help fight through the hot part of the day. This coming week the weather is suppose to warm up even more which should get even more bugs hatching and more fish rising. It’s a simple game this time of year, caddis, caddis, caddis.

Monterey Surf Fly Fishing Report

Monterey Surf Fly Fishing Report

Evan Praskin reports on 07.08.19

Summa time and the fishing’s easy!” Well, not all the time. But we have had one heck of a good striper run this season. Fish are spread out and being caught on multiple beaches throughout the central Cali coast giving anyone a good shot at connecting with one of these salty stripers. Last Saturday I was joined by a good buddy Mike from Redding who put in the work to get some hookups. The tide was incoming all morning and we had high hopes of connecting with a good bass since guys throwing plugs were getting blowups to the left and right of us. That little excitement was short lived and it seemed that everyone stopped hooking up after 8am. Mikey had already put surfperch on the deck when “bam” hook up.... heads shakes, running line ripping from the basket.... drag singing and it was on. Lots of laughs and mid battle fist bumps lead to the first striper for Mike? Nope! First surf shark of the season, a 3’ leopard! Diamond in the rough since these fish are usually scent hunters. You gotta be reeeal lucky or stalk these fish in flats where you can deliver a fly to their face. Otherwise it’s all luck out in the surf if chasing those bad boys. Good job Mike, thanks for coming out and almost getting a Monterey Bay hat trick!

McCloud River Fly Fishing Report

McCloud River Fly Fishing Report
The McCloud River

The magical McCloud River has been giving up some excellent days for us. Again evenings here are the main theme for catching fish. If you are willing to stay late you will be rewarded with some spectacular dry fly fishing.  Big bushy bugs about size 8 with a dropped nymph or a small Adams trailed behind it will get you in the game. The river has clouded up some due to Mud Creek so the spooky ability factor is diminished. Small bugs in size 14 and smaller are getting the job done for us but don’t be shy about throwing on that big rubber leg occasionally. The McCloud in the summer offers no crowds and nice cold water, a good recipe for giving us a shout and booking one of our outstanding McCloud guides.

Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report
The Upper Sac is in perfect shape now. July is here but fortunately the days are very mild, we have experienced no serious heat waves yet and the water remains cold due to the continuing runoff. We are seeing the Golden Stones just about ready to leave the party but on the other hand some dynamite late evening dry fly fishing is still available. Although the word is out that the river is in excellent shape and you fly fishers are here in numbers the beauty of the river is that there is 30 miles of access. Most fish during the day are taking a variety of nymphs including soft hackles, Red Copper Johns, Dark Lords and my favorite the LBS (little black shit). Best luck has been getting the bugs down near the bottom, the fish are hugging it due to the very clear visibility.
Give us a shout if you want to experience some fun time on the Upper Sac this summer.

Cheers
Rick Cox

California Delta Fly Fishing Report

California Delta Fly Fishing Report

Delta Fishing Report:

Captain Byrce Tedford reports on 07.05.19

Topwater Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass are going good! As water temperatures warm above 70 degrees the Largemouth & Smallmouth Topwater bite keeps getting better! For Largemouth I focus on higher tides in the am or pm hrs with larger 1/0-4/0 Frog patterns. For Smallmouth I like outgoing tides using poppers size 6-8 in various colors such as orange, white or black. Other Smallmouth tactics include smaller weighted subsurface patterns or dropping small leeches off of the poppers themselves. These Smallmouth trips are super fun for seasoned anglers & a great way to get newer people into the sport of fly fishing!

Fourth of July Fly Fishing Forecast

Fourth of July Fly Fishing Forecast

6.28.2019

We have been fishing all over the north state for trout and hitting the beaches for stripers. Both have had streaks of brilliance with the normal goose eggs that come with the territory. Looking ahead for the coming holiday week of fishing there are lots of options to fish some obvious and some outside of the box places to escape some of the crowds. As for me, I will be leaving after work on Saturday to fish my way through NV, ID, and Montana. Look forward to a report next week.

Fly Fishing San Francisco

John Tydell with a nice striper in SF

SUPER LOCAL

If you stuck behind and hanging out in the city my I would recommend hitting your favorite beach for stripers. If fishing beaches are not your thing (you should make it your thing it is a blast) head up to Marin and check out Alpine and Kent Lakes. I had a great morning fishing poppers to LMB last week. Putah Creek is always an option but I imagine it will be very crowded. On that same note, a trip to Russian River for Smallies or Shad could be a great time.

Another great time especially if you want to hammer a bunch of fish is to book a day on the delta for Small Mouth with Bryce Tedford or Steve Santucci.

2-3 HOUR TRIP

The Lower Yuba is at 3000cfs. This would be my top pick for trout fishing for a day trip from SF. Flows are perfect and you could always head below the Degaure Dam and fish for shad and stripers. I would head out there with a small streamer and caddis pupa behind it and swing some of the longer runs. Heading up to some the different forks of the Stanislaus could be a great way to explore and find some of your own water. Capt. Hogan brown has also been finding some killer stripers on the lower sac out of Chico. I would never pass up on opprotunity to get out on the water with Hogan!

3-5 HOUR TRIP

The North State is fishing extremely well. Pretty much everything is fishing well the Upper Sacramento River, The McCloud River, The Pit River, Hat Creek, and Fall River. If you are into Lakes Baum Lake, Manzinita Lake, McCumber Lake, and Lake Almanor. If you are trying to get off the beaten path check out Middle Fork of the Feather, and some of it's tributaties. The Truckee and Little Truckee are fishing awesome too. I spoke to Matt Koles and he said don't expect much in the way of Hatches maybe a few mayflies in the evening as it has still been pretty chilly up there.

We sincerly hope you are able to get out this summer and enjoy the bounty of water and fish we have right now. As always if we can help you with any of you trips, finding a guide, or point you in the right direction please don't hesitate to reach out. We hope you value our contributions to our local fishing scene and keep your business local.
