Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Hogan Brown Reports on 8.4.2016

Striper Fishing on the Lower Sac remains good to very good depending on the day. There is a pretty big range of fish on the feed on a  daily basis from small shakers to 3-5lbs fish to good double digit fish to true trophies. I saw a fish yesterday follow a nice 8lb fish up that made me and my client weak in our knees…my client actually grabbed my shoulder to steady herself. Most fish are still coming on heavy sinking lines as with higher flows and colder water temps then previous years the weed growth is not as prevalent. Fly selection is getting more important as fish have seen many of the “standard” flies and are getting a bit more selective so changing flies in productive runs is key at times. Salmon boat traffic is no existent as there are NO salmon in the river from what I can tell and other salmon anglers are saying. Striper fishing should last through October and I have a few dates open still. If you didn’t get out this fall I will be adding 2-3 more licensed captains for the 2017 season and booking will open up in February for shad and stripers.

Also been working on Cast Hopes next fund Raiser coming up…THE BIG NIGHT OUT AT THE SIERRA NEVAD BREWERY BIG ROOM IN CHICO CA. There will be dinner, live music by CHUCK RAGAN and the Wolf Creek Boys, silent Auction, Premier of the Beattie Productions movie on Cast Hope and MORE!!! tickets can be purchased at www.casthope.org/events

THE OTHER STUFF…

Any gear you are stoaked about? There is some great new gear coming out from Echo and AirFlo that I have been messing around with new big game glass rods, a warm weather and striper line. Simms has released their new fall line and the new down “Down Stream Jackets” are really NICE but to be honest if it is that cold I stay home…kinda a sissy with the cold…The new River Shed Hoody and Heavy Weight Flannel are more my speed.

Any change in the horizon? Fall is coming I have noticed already the sun is coming up later and going down earlier….

What are you looking forward to? College Football season specifically Notre Dame College Football Season…

Any open dates?
Oct 1 and 8 for stripers

Any music you’ve been digging lately? Lots of good music lately…been listening to Joey Kneiser’s solo stuff. Really good if you are a fan of Americana/Rock. Kinda Ryan Adamsish but with a bit more grit and real lifeness to it. Also been listening to some older Chris Robinson Brotherhood…we went camping over the last week so had to bring out the dirt twirl Jam band tunes….I could go on and on but I will stop there.
