Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Matt “Gilligan” Koles Reports on 8.18.2016
Little warm up here again. Descent fishing one day, not so good the next. Dog days of August I guess.
Best thing to do is get out in the mornings and nymph with some crayfish, or caddis and mayfly type combo. Cover some water and make sure you fish the heads of runs/ pools and the fast pocket water slots. It’s also hopper time, you may get a fish or two looking up. Swing streamers early and very late in the day, if you’re fishing streamers.
Flows are still very good on the Truckee River, but flows will drop from Boca eventually. I’m guessing after Labor Day. We are still in a drought. The river shouldn’t be nearly as low as the last few years, but it will get lower.
Speaking of low flows, the Little Truckee River will stay low from now into the fall. 30 cfs is a huge bummer. 375 cfs a few ago and basically nothing coming out now. Our Trout Unlimited Chapter#103 is working hard on better management for fish flows on the Truckee River and it’s tributaries. Progress is being been made.
Pyramid Lake opens in 6 weeks. The first week is lights out fishing. Get ready because it should be an exciting year. A 30 pound fish this year? We’ll see.
