Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverAug 4, 20161 min read

Matt “Gilligan” Koles Reports on 8.1.2016

Coming out of a nasty heat wave up here in Tahoe. Highs went over 100 in Truckee. Not a huge relief in the weather, but it should be cooler this week than last.

100 is extremely hot for us. It was hotter down here in the Hirsch. I have only been fishing in the mornings and getting off the water when it gets hot. Noon has been about it for me. We have mainly been tight line nymphing in the pocket water. Faster water, more oxygen=cooler water temps. Trout of course know this and move into those areas of the river.

Good flies have been anything crayfish or caddis related. You have to move and fish through a lot of water to find fish. Trout can be anywhere this time of year and you just have to cover the water thoroughly. Take a look at the Truckee River and there is good holding water just about everywhere.

Flows are very good still, but with the warm weather carry a thermometer and do a water temp. Above 68, call it quits.

Flows have lowered to around 125 cfs coming out of Stampede on the LT. That will make it much harder to nymph and not get salad all over your rig, but terrestrial time is here and hopper dropper rigs are a good choice.
