Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell Reports on 11.19.19

There’s no question that the steelhead fishing in 2019 has been one of the trickier years on the Deschutes. With that being said, fishing has been pretty darn good of late. Seems like a slug of fish have shown up. Swinging floating lines are pretty much done for the season. Water temps are sub 50 degrees, which means the steelhead are more lethargic and are not as willing to chase a fly, on or just below the surface. Getting your flies deeper in the water column will definitely increase your odds. A 10 foot chunk of T-11 and some sort of a leech pattern seems to be the ticket this time of season.

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Matt Gilligan Koles Reports on 11.19.19

Finally a change in the weather.

Not a big change, but at least it feels like fall now, or early winter?  Seems like it’s always feast or famine in Ca. You just never know what kind of winter we’ll have. We get pounded with snow, or we don’t.

Truckee River is cold and low in Ca. Don’t mean you can’t catch fish. If you know the type of water and rigs to fish in cold water, you’ll get a few good ones. Winter fishing.

In Nevada on the Truckee River the water is higher and warmer. I took a temp of 59 last week, crazy, for mid-November. The nymphing has been really good, streamer fishing not so good. I think that above sentence will flip flop now.

Delta Fly Fishing Report

Delta Fly Fishing Report

Captain Bryce Tedford Reports on 11.21.2019

Delta Fishing Report:

Fall Striper fishing has been in full swing on the CA Delta! We have had some solid days along with some challenging days mixed in. That said, weather has been incredible, Fall colors have been in full swing & we have been catching plenty of fish! The Stripers are generally feeding on Threadfin Shad 2-6” long. I like to use various Chartreuse/white combinations with/without rattles. Size of the fly depends on the bait in area but definitely try larger & smaller flies in a given area. Large Stripers can be found here & there if you are willing to work for them & go hunt. Some days I have got into many 3-5lb fish with some larger 5-20lb fish mixed in, other days the larger fish have been tough to locate. For large Striper hunting I like Intermediate, type 3 & type 6 sinking lines with large Steve Adachi rattle style Clouser flies in various colors.

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson Reports on 11.21.2019

We received our first significant snowfall of the winter last night. Currently, all of the major mountain passes have closed; Tioga, Sonora, and Monitor. Tioga could be closed for the season unless we have another sustained period of warm, dry weather. The general trout season closed on November 15th. Make sure you are aware of the local regulations, as some streams stay open year around but other have closed. In general the fishing has slowed down. Just get yourself into the mindset of grinding away on good runs, being patient, expect less trout, and enjoy your surroundings.

East Walker

The East Walker is dribbling along at 21 cfs. Until the river flows pick up, I recommend giving this fishery a rest…..

West Walker

The river has dropped considerably thru the canyon and is at 40 cfs. Try patterns like zebra midges and small mayflies. Dry droppers work really well at these flows.

San Joaquin

The road to Devil’s Postpone is closed for the season.

Hot Creek

The creek is flowing through the canyon at roughly 50 cfs. Target your casts to the feeding lanes between the weeds and rocks, plus the overhanging grasses along the margins. You may not see fish, but they are there. Try a dry-dropper setup with a caddis above and a midge or small mayfly below. Hot Creek is always a fun place to fish especially now that the crowds have gone home.

Upper Owens River

Just a reminder, the Upper Owens is closed for the season BELOW the bridge to the reservoir. The flows are 111 cfs but these are readings taken high in the river system. Once Hot Creek dumps into the mid-section the flows are closer to over 160 cfs. More and more trout are pushing up into the river system from the reservoir. There are some really nice fish to be had with SJ worms, small baetis, and balanced leeches. Work the deeper buckets relentlessly…. they are in there.

Lower Owens River

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has finally lowered their flushing flows through the Gorge and below Pleasant Valley Reservoir. The river is running steady at roughly 144 cfs and is fishing well with all of the traditional patterns; PT’s, Hare’s Ears, midges, caddis worms…. got out there!

Klamath River Fly Fishing Report

Klamath River Fly Fishing Report
John Rickard Reports on 11.14.2019
The Klamath River
We haven’t seen the river this busy since the last time it was the only game around. The Trinity and Rogue have not kept their devotees and they have descended on the Klamath River. In desperate need of rains the Klamath at least has a decent run of fish. Adults steelhead have been 2-3 pounds with the occasional 5 pounder. Lets hope they get some habitat to spawn in. Guide trips are all successful and fish are being caught with every technique we employ. Its a great time to enjoy this beautiful Fall and learn how to chase steelhead.

California Delta Fly Fishing Report

California Delta Fly Fishing Report

Captain Steve Santucci Reports on 11.13.19

Delta fishing is continuing to improve.  It has been moderate so far this fall as we have not yet really had a large influx of new fish.  It has been good for a few bigger fish.  It's hard to predict because the weather has been unusually warm this season.

The general trout season will be closing soon, November 15th, to be exact. Make sure you are aware of the local regulations, as some streams stay open year around but others close in a week. In general the fishing has slowed down. Just get yourself into the mindset of grinding away on good runs, being patient, expect less trout, and enjoy your surroundings.

San Joaquin

The road to Devil’s Postpone is closed for the season.

Hot Creek

The creek is flowing through the canyon at 52 cfs.

The flows are 108 cfs but these are readings taken high in the river system. Once Hot Creek dumps into the mid-section the flows are closer to over 160 cfs. More and more trout are pushing up into the river system from the reservoir. There are some really nice fish to be had with balanced leeches and punk perch. Work the deeper buckets relentlessly…. they are in there.

Lower Owens River

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has finally lowered their flushing flows through the Gorge and below Pleasant Valley Reservoir. The river is running steady at roughly 175 cfs, a tad on the high side yet for wading, but doable. I am looking forward to fishing down there again. Stay tuned…..

California Surf Fly Fishing Report

California Surf Fly Fishing Report

Ben Engle Reports on 11.13.19

The surf has been solid recently.  We are nearing the end of the season for pursuing stripers on our local beaches but I feel like until we get the next big rainstorm they will be around.  Make sure that you make the best of this time of year and get out while the stripers are still around!

We had a Surf Clinic on Crissy this last week and it was a beautiful morning out there.  Ended up getting one striper and a couple perch on the west end of the beach which made for some extremely happy clinic attendees.

This time of year I also start to switch up the gameplan a bit and start to throw some lighter weight rods for perch. In the winter months the perch will start moving in closer to the beach since the bar they feed on tends to be closer to the shore. Its a great opportunity to throw a 5wt or 6wt for some feisty 1-2 lb Redtails and Barred Surf Perch.  If you have any questions about lightweight setups for winter perch please don't hesitate to call us at LCO.

Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Richard Loft Reports on 11.10.2019

Hey everyone I just wanted to check in and report that flows are between 53.7 and 88 cfs pretty normal for this time of year , but fishing has held steady with good numbers to net all last month and so far November is still producing good numbers and a few really big fish in the system willing to play ball if your willing to put in the time as always Putah Creek is and has always been a river to fish  with it being only forty minutes from my house I get lots of practice. Over the last few weeks I have been really focusing on getting more familiar with high sticking and with these low flow conditions it seems to be a great option with low flows it helps present a much cleaner drift but the big fish seem to be holding in the deeper runs . With that I am out so I look forward to seeing you on the creek and look for me and Rusty my constant companion and best friend

Rogue River, Klamath River, Upper Sacramento and McCloud River Fly Fishing Report

Rogue River, Klamath River, Upper Sacramento and McCloud River Fly Fishing Report

Rick Cox Reports on 10.7.2019

Our Wild Waters Fly Fishing guides have been super busy burning the miles and taking advantage of all the current opportunities that are presenting themselves. Fall is such a great opportunistic time to sample the many rivers near us. The Rogue River has had an excellent return of summer steelhead and the fall/winter fish are just starting to arrive. We have been doing beats from the dam down to TouVelle Park and finding fish. Chrome has also been giving us a good year on the Klamath with an outstanding run of half pounders mixed in with adults. Both of these rivers will only improve as we get into the rest of Fall and when we start getting rain. The Lower Sacramento continues to be just a solid choice for those wanting a day in the boat chasing the big rainbows that the river offers. The salmon are spawning now and the trout menu is all about gobbling eggs. The McCloud has seen crowded on the weekends but mid week has been much quieter as far as crowds. We have been seeing an outstanding year for the October Caddis and the big Stimulators and Chubbys have been the ticket. It closes on the 15th and the browns are beginning their spawning so caution when wading, give the redds a wide birth. The Upper Sacramento, which stays open all year, has been giving up some large fish and is fishing well from Ney Springs to Delta. The October Caddis seem more prevalent from Dunsmuir up to Ney so if you want to throw big dries this is where you want to be, particularly in the late afternoon.

Give us a shout if any of these tickle you, we would love to get you out on the river with one of our excellent guides.
