Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Jordan Romney reports on 3.30.17

Flows 1200 up top, 3000 down low

Color: Clear in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon.

Some seriously nice fish have been in the net the past couple of weeks. Read any guide report in the area and you will see one consistent thing, quality fishing. It seems this week with the warmer weather the rainbows have come out to play. They have some good spunk to them. There are still several quality browns coming to the net too.

The flows are coming down, opening more spots to fish. The edges are a good place to start but we found some fish a little further out this past week too. Skip fast water, the water temps are too cold for fish to be in the fast stuff.

About 10 days ago I saw a few March Browns start to hatch but nothing since. I think the cold snap put a halt on them. Make sure to show up prepared though. A few BWO’s have been coming off and a few skwalas are still around. Eggs, and san juans have been the go-to’s.

The streamer fishing has been decent. I’ve been doing better a little later in the day, once the fish have had something to eat and the water temps come up a bit. I like a black sculpzilla or a shovel head sculpin.

Get on the books now. We will be approaching run off in about a month and the river may not be fishable for a bit. Get in before this happens. The official trout season opener is April 22nd. This will start giving us some more options of places to fish. I am really excited about this because we have plenty of water. Most of these places haven’t had enough water in them to fish the past few years. This year that won’t be a problem.

Open dates April 14, 15, 17, 20, 26-29
