Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Matt “Gilligan” Koles reports on 3.16.17
Near perfect weather on the Truckee River.
Still big water, almost up to 1,500 cfs here in the Hirsch again, but man, couldn’t ask for a nicer week. Lots of water coming out of Lake Tahoe.
Seems like the whole world is here fishing in Hirschdale. Remember, there’s like 50 fishable trout miles on the Truckee River. You may do better if you can get away from these shell shocked trout. Just saying. For most, yes, the river is almost too big to fish anywhere below the Hirsch. It can be done though.
Above Hirschdale and up towards Glenshire should be you best fishing right now.
All kinds of bugs out. Some early spring caddis, blue wing olives, winter stones, and the bigger skwala stones. Much more food on the menu for out trouts, and boy are these fish looking good. Spring brings the abundance of bugs.
Fish the soft stuff. Look down a run and look for the softest shit you can find. Clarity is rather good, the water is just big. Fish can be caught though. Any rig can and will work right now.
I’m rocking a new Stealthcraft raft. The Hooligan is light and easy to portage. Check those guys out and tell them Gilligan sent you.
Also, I’m sick of the Chinese made sunglasses. If you want a quality made pair of polarized shades check out Shwood from Portland OR. I will have sunglasses this summer to demo if you want to check them out.
I have 1 spot left for the streamer clinic. I will post about the Tight Line Clinic this week.
