Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Jordan Romney reports on 3.30.17

Flows: 1100

Color: Green

At this point, I am not sure if the flows are ever going to play nice for us.  The creek has been hovering around 900-1100 cfs.  The glory hole is still spilling over, and has been for the past 35 days.  There have been periods where the lake level looks like it will stop spilling but then a new weather pattern heads our way.  These storms have been short but wet.  Only raining for a day or so but a ton of water drops during that day.

One thing that is a real possibility is the creek might not run as high as normal this summer.  The flows in the creek during the summer are determined by how much water the farmers need.  Being that their ditches and canals are already full they might not need as much water as they have ordered in the past.  This could cause the creek to fish at a more manageable flow.

I’ve had a few decent outings on the creek over the past couple of weeks.  It is a totally different ball game right now.  The typical sz 22 zebra midge is hopeless.  Leave your tiny wd 40s in the truck.  Bigger, heavier and flashier will get more attention.  Streamer fishing is a good option too if you can find a spot to use it.

I have some April dates open but not many.  Get at me and let’s get out there.  It’s a game of going.  You don’t know if you don’t go.  The biggest fish of your life may be on your next cast.

Open dates April 14, 15, 17, 20, 26-29
