Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Matt Koles reports on 4.13.17

Really, really good despite the very high flows.

Hard to believe that I’m saying we are catching fish at 4000k on the Truckee River, but we are. The fish we are catching are big, fat healthy fish. Not getting lots of numbers, but big fat gnarly fish we are getting. Like I’ve been saying, find some good bank water and hit it. Don’t wade in. Hit it with some weight and get you flies in the zone. Deep, deep bank water is how it is right now. I’ve been fishing one fly because you will get hung up on a ton of wood and shit along the old banks. 1x is what I’m fishing right now.

With 1x tippet you should be able to rope fish in. They will work you in this high water, but don’t let them. Get them in quick and release them back in some soft water. Watch some dude fighting tarpon on a fly rod on YouTube and that’s how you fight trout too. With the butt of the rod, not the tip.

So, get used to this high water. It keeps snowing and snowing and snowing. It all still has to melt. We don’t have any snow in the Hirsch any longer, but man, there’s still a lot on top. Big water years mean big fish years.
