California Delta Fly Fishing Report

Steve Santucci reports on 5.3.18

Delta

Delta Striper fishing remains strong.   You can catch good numbers of fun size fish.  We have been catching them on a 5 inch Clouser Minnow dressed with Chartreuse over White.

The water temps are between  64 and 67 degrees.  Most of the Stripers can be found in the cooler water.

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Anthony Carruesco reports on 5.3.18

Lower Sac

The “Lower Sac” has crept up over the past week to 7k cubes. Typically, those flow changes will put the fish down a bit. That certainly was not the case last week as fishing remained very solid through the rise in the flow. We can expect the flow to creep a little closer to 10k as summer arrives.

A lot of fish seem to be coming off the spawn now – they’re...

Deschutes Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell reports on 5.3.18

Deschutes

The months of May and June are truly one of the best times for trout fishing; especially dry fly fishing. Bigger small, Salmon flies, Mayflies, Caddis, and Green Drakes all come out to party for the next upcoming months. Weather can play a big role in dictating hatches. Warm overcast days are prime conditions for mayflies while hot sunny conditions improve... Continue reading

Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Rob Russell reports on 5.3.18

Putah

The colors are changing at Putah Creek.  Lush foliage of the Spring is quickly replaced by the now desiccated, straw-colored grasses.  Temperatures in the 70s and 80s make for extremely pleasant fishing these days.  Coupled with flows around 330 cfs, this makes for good fishing conditions and wading access.     Nymphing remains the most common technique.

High...

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson reports on 5.3.18

Well, it was a wild week with the weather and the fishing opener. We had tons of people, boats, wind, snow, rain, and some good fishing. It was fun! I spent Saturday tucked into the thickets and brush on one of the northern county streams and got into some nice fish, but I had a rubber hook weekend. I was a genius at hooking but an absolute dunce when it came to...

Surf Fly Fishing Report

Evan Praskin reports on 5.3.18

This last Saturday we had our Fly Fish the Surf/Bay clinic at Crissy Field and it was a hit! The group of guys and gals we had were eager to learn and picked up our lessons quick. All of our attendees started off the morning getting lines wet with some basic instruction followed by some “surf talk” right there on the sand.

The rest of the day was balanced out with...

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Jon Baiocchi reports on 5.3.18

Truckee

The flows have been slowly dropping on the Truckee River the last few weeks, we’ve had some warmer days where there is more of a melt of the snowpack, and coolers days where there is not as much. Flows as of 4/30 in the upper watershed are running at 490 cubes, east of town they are at 991 cfs, and down in the canyon the flows are 1,050 cfs.

Water is clear for...

Lower Sacramento Shad Fly Fishing Report

Capt. Hogan Brown reports on 5.2.18

Lower Sacramento River Shad fishing is getting going. Heard from my buddy Captain Darrin Deel that there were shad down around Colusa which means I am sure you can get out around Chico and catch a few fish. With the warm weather coming in this week I am sure the fish will be through Chico by next week making for some good fishing and the start of shad season.

Lower Feather River Fly Fishing Report

Capt. Hogan Brown reports on 5.3.18

Lower Feather

Lower Feather River Spring steelhead fishing remains fair to good. Spent a few days out swinging flies with clients in the high flow section of the river. Flows in the Low Flow are around 800cfs and around 1500cfs in the high flow.

On the overcast cooler days, the caddis hatches were a bit slower and we were getting fish on more traditional swung...

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Matthew Koles reports on 5.3.18

Truckee River

Good spring fishing on the Truckee River.

The season trout opener was Saturday, though most folks fish year round these days on the bigger rivers. The Truckee River is open from Lake Tahoe all the way down now.

Flows are nearing 1000 cfs here in the Hirsch. Getting closer to normal, though you never know what normal is in the spring with runoff and...
