Yosemite and Sierra Foothill Fly Fishing Report

Rick Mazaira reports on 3.31.2016

It’s all about the Moke & the Stan right now. Until the opener we are spending our days here. With water & snow pack in the low 90 percentile, we are going to have a more normal cycle to our season so look to fish smaller tributaries in early May.

Mokelumne- Fishing well, big caddis are popping off, BWO’s start at 11:00 thread body mayflies are doing well.

Yosemite report

Rick Mazaira reports on 3.17.2016

This winter’s snow pack is a gift! We are expecting normal flows and a return to a more normal fishing cycle, key to success in the western Sierra.

Rhythm of the River
Winter- We have 4 river systems open year round that we guide on. Tail waters are key for this time of year though challenging, fishing this time of year brings out the best in you skills and the worst of you patience.

Spring- Pre-opening day there are gems at mid elevation like the San Juaquin and the Kings River above Pine Flat that have windows of opportunity with #12 March Brown dries, as soon as the run off gets too bad we pack up and move on to…

South facing creeks, with dry flies and nymphs to enjoy hiking approaches and wildflower blooms which on good water years are stellar! With this always have some stoneflies with you and look for them in the water system- it’s a sign of a healthy river.

Summer- We are going full swing watching flows, runoff, and thunderstorms. With this year there should be a return to the hatch patterns of PMD’s and Caddis. My favorite is to chase the snow line as it retreats and get into the high country lakes and rivers.

Fall- With the water’s return we should be seeing the Salmon & Steelhead return to the lower rivers and have our twilight runs before closure on October 31.
Hope you are planning to get out there and enjoy more of what we have to offer. Call or email us!

Cheers,
Rick

Yosemite & Surrounding Areas Fly Fishing Report

Rick Mazaira of Yosemite Outfitters Reports on 3.3.2016

With the storms pending this week end the best bet for fishing is to check flows on the tailwater rivers below the dams and look for flows around 400cfs huge amounts of silt have come down, and are mucking up the water turbidity is high. The silt is the build up over the last four years of low water, lots of flushing going on.

Foothill fly Fishing Report

Rick Mazaira Reports on 2.10.2016

Nothing like a day drifting, and the Stanislaus, it’s a special river. Great scenery, and a healthy diversity of fish from rainbows to stripers; and whether you like to nymph, or swing it is a fun time. Be mindful of time, the put ins and take outs close at sunset.

We are also joining with Doug Oulette to host a clinic at Pyramid Lake March 12th, it’s $125.00...

Here’s the latest…

Stanislaus- Lot of work to get them. Drifting is best with eggs, & nymphs.
Lower  Tuolumne- crowded, and slow fishing, hopefully the storms will agitate  the water and after a week it should fish well. Use eggs, nymphs, and a  BWO dry.

Merced below El Portal to Bagby blown due to storms
Use Nymphs and check the weather before you...

Yosemite Fly Fishing Report

With the some  weather instability- water  clarity & temperature are the key, if looking at situation with  turbid water- look to try UV treated flies or bright, bigger patterns. Though not big weather events you still need to be  careful with approaches to  water and the conditions you’re in. Now from North to South…
