Fall River

Fall River is fishing well as it’s usual self. Mid morning dries, afternoon leaching, and evening hex hatch. For dries; Pmds and calibaetis tend to be the most abundant. When fishing dries I like to use a 15ft 5x leader and add 3ft of 6x fluorocarbon. this has been the best combo I have found for sticking nice fish on dries.

Nymphing rig a small bobber the take is...

5 Rivers Fishing Report

5 Rivers Challenge – as good of a Nor Cal report as you will get.

Last year when Cal Trout & Clearwater Lodge resurrected the 5 Rivers Challenge I really wanted to participate. Not for competitive aspect, but it just sounded like a great way to spend a few days. This year after attending I can confirm it is a blast. First, Clearwater Lodge is one of my favorite places to stay and...

Fall River & Hat Creek Fly Fishing Report

Dave Neal Reports on 6.9.2017

I’m in Fall River Valley today and it feels like October weather, not June! Nor Cal report: Been all over Shasta County this past week fishing from Lower Sac, Hat Creek, Fall River, McCloud and Baum Lake. Everything is good and getting better as the summer season comes into bloom.

Today’s weather is a little weird, but hey, I’ll take it as I’m sure we’ll have plenty of...

Hat Creek Report

6.2.2017

Some nice fish coming out of Hat Creek. Large salmon flies have been out during the day in small numbers and Golden Stones have been coming out in the evening.

You can expect to see PMD hatches in the flat water above 299 in the evening. Use a long 12ft 5x leader and throw 3ft of 6x fluoro on the end of that for best results.

Hat Creek Fly Fishing Report

5/25/2017

Hat Creek has been fishing pretty well. The Salmonflies have started coming off down by the barrier where the creek goes into Lake Britton. BWO, Caddis and Drakes can all be spotted on any given day out there as well. If you are looking for a refuge from high flows Hat Creek might be your bet.

This is a great time to fish large dries below 299 bridge to the lake.

Hat creek is not any easy...

Celebrating a New Fishing Season

The holiest of days is close and I’m sure the twitches are settling in for all you die hards. As you know and can witness below the north state is experiencing the results of the record setting Winter. Current conditions on most of our rivers present marginal fishing until all this settles down. The nonstop march of storms from the...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Dave Neal reports 9.29.2016

Autumnal Equinox has arrived and thus marks a special time of year to be excited about fly fishing in Northern California. There’s fall color popping at the higher elevations and salmon & steelhead entering our longer river systems at the lower elevations.

Evenings are noticeably cooling off and the mornings at sunrise are now chilly enough to warrant that cotton hoody...

Burney/Fall River Fly Fishing Report

Michelle Titus @ Clearwater Lodge Reports on 7.21.2016

The Intermountain region continues to produce numerous trout for the avid angler. On the Fall River, the Hex hatch is slowing down though there are still episodes of big beautiful rainbows gobbling up Hexagenia Limbata Mayflies after sunset. This annual hatch is something special to experience.

Northern California Fly Fishing Report

Leslie Ajari Reports on 7.21.2016

McCloud River:
The McCloud river has fished very well the past few days, with prolific caddis hatches in the evenings. Also, nymphing with dark lords and smaller stones and mayflies have been working very well.

Fall River:
The hex hatch is still happening! It has been an epic year for those big yellow mayflies. The fish are fat and strong and tuned into this...

Northern California Fly Fishing Report

Dax Messett Reports on 7.21.2016

Fishing has been really good most everywhere this pas week in Northern California.

Fall River:The hex hatch is still happening on most nights. If it’s windy, find somewhere with a good wind break and you will find the fish. During the day you can find a good calibaetis hatch on lower parts of Fall, which has made head hunting with drys for large fish a fun game to...
