Truckee Fly Fishing Report

Matthew Koles reports on 5.31.18

Really good fishing on the Truckee River.

The sun finally came out after about 2 weeks of rain. Flows are slowly coming down again. It’s ridiculously beautiful up here with all the green and the trees and bushes and things. Birds are chirping, deer are out, and the fish are healthy. Now we’ll get right into summer.

The whole river should explore with bugs this week...

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Jordan Romeny reports on 5.31.18

It’s good! Not a gimme at all but persistence pays off. The last few weeks have shown some very unsettled weather. We were ducking thunderstorms daily providing hit or miss results. It looks like we are settling in a bit so get ready for good fishing.

The river has been running high but compared to 2017 we aren’t scared about high water. The river is starting to drop...

The Historic 1948 Striper Migration

Capt. Kevin DeGulis reports on 5.31.18

San Francisco Bay

Surf Fly Fishing is a unique way of catching striped bass ranging from the east coast all the way to the west. Although most California fly fishers prefer to fish from boats in the Delta, there are some who prefer the surf. I think what drives a surf fly fisher is the turbulent, noisy ocean, the smell of salt spray, and the thrill of catching...

California Delta Fly Fishing Report

Steve Santucci reports on 5.31.18

Delta

Striper Fishing is still good when you can find a decent wind day.  Water temps are still hovering in the high 60’s in some areas.  Largemouth Bass Fishing was great last week especially if you fished with some good cloud cover.  Using Deer hair flies for the Largemouth Bass and 4-inch Clousers for the Stripers.

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson reports on 5.31.18

Sierra Nevada

The spring runoff is underway. As you drive along US 395, while keeping a wary eye open for migrating deer, check out Convict and Mammoth Creeks and of course the West Walker. The West Walker, in particular, is raging, off-color, and spectacular to see. Convict and Mammoth Creeks have spilled over their banks and are flooding the adjacent meadows....

Monterey Surf Fly Fishing Report

Evan Praskin reports on 5.31.18

Surf

Summer weather is upon us! The water is looking awesome and the morning fog seems to be lingering well into the morning, just wish the fish were more hungry! It has been a tough bite this past week. Stripers and perch are being caught, but they sure are making us work for them. On Sunday I was out with avid surf fly fisherman Dennis from SF. We worked a good...

California Delta Fly Fishing Report

Captain Bryce Tedford reports 5.31.18

Delta

Striper fishing has slowed down, for the most part, there are still a few Stripers out there but Largemouth & Smallmouth will become the name of the game. Water temperatures are approaching 70 degrees so Largemouth & Smallmouth Topwater is about to go off!

June through September I turn my focus to Smallmouth & Largemouth, returning to Stripers come fall.

I...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Capt. Hogan Brown reports on 5.31.18

Lower Sacramento

Shad fishing has been fair. A bit hit and miss as schools are concentrated and there is not just big pods of fish everywhere. If you are on a big pod fishing is great if not it is mediocre and finding the big pods can be challenging as they spread throughout the system.

That said most evenings we have been getting into some good shad fishing and...

San Francisco Fly Fishing Report

Capt. Kevin DeGulis reports on 5.24.18

Angel Island

Ben Engle was able to take the day off Wednesday. Even though the fishing was slow, he always finds the fish. Roping in a solid 24 inch Striped Bass Fish, using a nasty fly that he tired up himself.

This week in the surf has been slow, the weather changes seem to be putting the fish in a funk. Earlier this week, Kim Laur and I took out an...
