On the fly - Broken Rod Repair

We recently had two broken rods come into the shop. The individuals could not wait for their rods to go back to the factory to be repaired. Both were pretty amazed when we were able to get them operational on the spot. I wanted to share a few techniques that may help you get your gear back up and running quickly:

  1. Problem: Break in the very tip of the rod- The main necessary component to this...

Fly fishing for the mighty steelhead is not always pretty, and...

Fly fishing for the mighty steelhead is not always pretty, and this issue’s T-Motion theater illustrates the very real deal in the search for Pacific Northwest steelies. The weather during this early spring shoot was as usual; rain, rain and more rain. The rivers rose fast, cleared out, and rose again with each new rain storm. My friend and angler on film, Jack Mitchell, has lived in the Pacific...

Streamer Tactics for Large Trout

By Jon Baiocchi

It’s a known fact that big flies catch big trout, but at the same time don’t be surprised if a smaller fish attacks your 4-inch streamer. Not many fly anglers choose the path of swinging, and stripping meat flies, but in my opinion, it’s a technique all anglers should have in their tool...

Bay Area Surf Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.2.17

A few surf reports are trickling in. Surf perch are out there for the taking and the swell for the next few days will not exceed 2.7ft, which means manageable waves on the beaches.

From Point Reyes to Monterey is all within striking distance for Bay anglers. You may even get into a few early stripers trying to escape the turbid bay.

Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.2.17

Familiar refrain on the Upper Sac too, still a bit high to fish. We’d like to see about half the volume. 1400cfs is historical average right now, so we’re headed on the right path. If we get some dry and not too warm (read: snowmelt) we could see some good spring fishing out here. Think skwalas, BWO’s and maybe march browns.

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.2.17

Pretty much crickets out there. Running 60,000cfs right now so… The fishing is happening not-so-much.

Lake Shasta is just about full, and with so much runoff coming, the Sac is going to be high for a while. Now, if it drops to like 20-30k and clear the streamer fishing can be killer. That’s still really high flow to be sure, but it gives us a target and...

Trinity River Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.2.17

The Trinity is dropping, albeit very slowly. All the little creeks along the way are still pumping lots of water. The surrounding mountains have plenty of snow and water filtering downhill, into the river.

The way upper, think Steel Bridge area, is still in good shape and putting out a few fish. If you go be prepared for company. As you can see from the...

Coastal Steelhead Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.2.17

Like we’ve seen all winter, when it finally looks like steelhead game-on, we’re due for another storm.

Above is a graph of the South Fork of the Eel at Leggett. If you can get up there tomorrow you’ll find high, but fishable-ish, water. After that, the incoming precipitation will knock the Eel and most of the coastal rivers out again.

The Smith and other...

Delta Fly Fishing Report

Bryce Tedford reports on 3.2.17

Water is still off color in much of the Delta but there are a few fish to be had for the hearty angler! All about finding cleaner water right now, fish the back of the sloughs, tops of Deepwater channels or anywhere you can find cleaner water. Fish larger flies with rattles in the dirty water & of course 4-6" chartreuse/white Clousers are the way to go in cleaner...
