Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Jordan Romney reports on 3.16.17

Putah Creek Flows 1020

Every day the flows drop little by little. This has been like watching paint dry. We need it to get a little lower before we can get out and wade it. The good news is that the clarity looks good. Visibility is anywhere between 2 and 4 ft, which is plenty for fish to find food. There are some major changes out there that I have seen. Some beaver...

Deschutes & Owyhee River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell reports on 3.16.17

Spring Time !!

Spring is starting early this year. With the snow pack bigger than we’ve seen in years, temps warmer than average for mid-March and rain added to the mix, most of the rivers in Oregon are getting bigger by the second. The bad news is from the looks of things, the Owyhee and it’s Skwala hatch is going the way of the dodo this season. Because of all the...

Yosemite Fly Fishing Report

Rick Mazaria reports on 3.16.17

Run off is here. There are narrow windows of opportunity so get out and enjoy when you can. As always check before you go, fish the edges with caution. Here are some shots of the Kings River above Pine Flat ushering in a great bloom and time to fish.

Mokelumne-  5,000 CFS- Too big to fish, best to stay away.

Stanislaus- 1,140 CFS - Too high to float.

Tuolumne - 1,100...

Lower Sac and Sierra Foothills Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 3.16.17

Still chasing some bass out on the Oroville Afterbay. Found water in the 50-62 degree range so a HUGE fluctuation throughout the lake. Clarity is still way off so fishing slow and meticulous, with dark flies with a rattle is best. Water levels fluctuated A LOT over the last 2 weeks and the fish have been on and off the bite as I think they are fluctuating on and off...

Delta Fly Fishing Report

Steve Santucci reports on 3.16.17

Fished the Delta this week.  Caught some fish in the San Joaquin.  Believe it or not, the Delta is finally fishable.  The water is slightly off color with about 2 to 3 feet of  visibility, with temperatures hovering around the 60 degree mark. Caught them on Clousers that were in the 5 inch range tied with black, purple, chartreuse and orange.

I have openings...

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson reports on 3.16.17

We have been enjoying a nice break from the stormy days of January but these warm, sunny days are about to end. Early next week, a new series of cold fronts will be rolling into the Sierra. We are expecting several feet of new snow by this time next week. I need to keep focused on winter activities and keep my mind free of tropical beaches fantasies. It ain’t over...

Behind the Emerald Curtain exposes the harmful practices...

Behind the Emerald Curtain exposes the harmful practices occurring on Oregon’s private timberlands under the Oregon Forest Practices Act: streams logged right through with no buffers; landslides from logging on steep slopes; pesticides sprayed from helicopters, drifting into homes and clinics and poisoning forest workers. Come take a peek Behind the Emerald Curtain.

The Bay

The bay is starting to look good. I am going to put some hours in over the next couple days. I will give you a report, but it has been too muddy for the past couple weeks.

Coastal Steelhead Report

The North Coast has been getting a lot of rain the past week. The rivers have peaked and are on the drop. The Smith will be fishable by Monday the rest will fall into shape later in the week provided the forecast is accurate. Next weekend could be one of your better shots to get out and fish. For those of you with flexible schedules, it will be sooner

Water, Trucking Fish and a Dirty Damn Dam

I attended a talk that Cal Trout hosted last week and here are the cliff notes:

First up was Dr. Jeff Mountwho is perhaps the most interesting water specialist in California. Mount began his presentation explaining how varied California climate is as a state and over time. He confirmed that the state is out of the surface water drought and the rain falls are higher than 2011 but shy of 1983 in...
