Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Bucko Theriot reports on 5.11.17

image

Today, I had to switch from shorts and sandals–that I have been enjoying all week–for boots and jeans. Yes, the cold weather has once again rolled in and we are expecting the night time lows to get to the 30s for the rest of the week. So if you are planning a camping on the

McCloud or Upper Sac

, bring some warm gear.

Currently the

Upper Sac

is flowing at 2500...

Redding Area Fly Fishing Report

Wild Waters Fly Fishing reports on 5.10.17

The Upper and Lower Sac are running big but fish are being caught. The Lower Sac went back up to 13,000cfs over the weekend but the fish did not seem to be bothered. It’s A great time to be out on it while the temps are mild. A recent trip on it used a combo of running drifts from the boat and getting out to fish buckets and side channels …. very effective...

Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Richard Loft reports on 5.11.17

Hey Everyone- The flows at Putah Creek are currently 325cfs and water clarity is fair this week. This is super exciting because this is my first real “catching” report since the floodwaters hit Putah. Just when I was beginning to worry that there would be no good fishing this year, the rain stopped, the creek finally dropped to fishable levels, and is fishing well...

Tips for Fly Fishing High Water

1) Go big or go home:High flows will have the golden stones and salmonflies pushed down into the lower reaches of the rivers. These poor swimmers are ideal pray for large trout. So, fishing large Jimmy Legs and other salmonfly/stone fly patterns are the ticket. Speaking of going larger, you may want to fish heavier tippet and rods as it will be much easier to fight fish in the heavy current....

Steep walls, jagged rocks, slick boulders, and an unforgiving...

Steep walls, jagged rocks, slick boulders, and an unforgiving river bottom - these are all significant traits of many of the American west’s great canyon fisheries. There are no long drives down sketchy backgrounds, or even an obscene amount of hiking - but many points to descend into one of these canyon fisheries are downright intimidating. In the pilot episode of The Extra Mile series, we...

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Matt Koles reports on 5.3.17

Big pumping flows.

Lots of water coming out of Lake Tahoe right now into the Truckee River. 2000K coming out of the lake. Lots of water coming out of everything else too. What you have is about 5,400 cfs here in the Hirsch. Much higher and more dirty down below. Word is that peak flows will happen on May 17th, but I think it will be later.

We’re catching some good...

North Yuba Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 5.4.17

image

Our own shop rat, Brett Wedeking, fished the North Yuba River last weekend and as you’d expect, the water is ripping. With the heat wave this week the water is on the rise full of snowmelt. Water temps max out around a chilly 42 degrees.

The fish are still there however, and Brett found a few tightlining nymphs along the edges. Most of the water is white, but...

Surf & Bay Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 5.4.17

The capturing continues to improve out in the salt. We’re hearing positive coastal reports from Monterey to Bolinas. Still mostly schoolie shakers but with a few larger fish showing up (especially for the gear guys). The last winter has completely remodeled our beaches, so the holes and troughs you fished last fall are likely not there anymore. However,...

Delta Fly Fishing Report

Steve Santucci reports on 5.3.17

Delta fishing is fair to good for Stripers this week. Lots of wind and tough fishing conditions but we still managed to catch fish and also catch some bigger fish. Hopefully we have a better weather pattern upcoming and maybe it will translate into better fishing. This is the time of year that you might catch your personal best. It’s always a treat to be able to...

Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee River Report

Gigantic flows are still the norm on the Truckee River and with this brief heat wave they will increase even more. The flows at Glenshire are at 2,900 cubes, and down in the canyon they are at 5,500 cfs. You’ll see minor spikes with water levels in the late afternoon into the evening from the melting snowpack. Water temps are 46 to 48 degrees....
