Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverMay 4, 20171 min read

Matt Koles reports on 5.3.17

Big pumping flows.

Lots of water coming out of Lake Tahoe right now into the Truckee River. 2000K coming out of the lake. Lots of water coming out of everything else too. What you have is about 5,400 cfs here in the Hirsch. Much higher and more dirty down below. Word is that peak flows will happen on May 17th, but I think it will be later.

We’re catching some good fish though. Not a lot of water to fish, but if you can get into a good soft spot, your lifetime fish is there. The poundage of fish we’ve got the last few weeks is un-real.

So at these flows, the river is not for everyone, but the good news is that general trout season is here and everything is open for trout fishing. Problem is that every other creek and river are running high and cold too.

The Little Truckee River is big, fishable, but big. Clear and big and cold.

So you have the lakes, you have bass in the foothills, but for the Truckee River, unless you know where to go, you should wait awhile.

Cheers,
