Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Brian “Bucko” Theriot Reports on 5.18.2016

The Upper Sac is almost in prime shape to make it wader friendly throughout the whole river. The flows have dropped down to 673 cfs but that could change with rain on the way. I would focus on the The Upper Part of the River that is definitely more easier to wade than the lower part. We are seeing salmon flies, golden stones, caddis, and mayflies hatching...

McCloud River

Opening weekend on the McCrowd lived up to its name. Most of the popular public water saw many anglers paying homage and the ever popular Simms hatch was definitely occurring. Reports I got from most were it was a good social occasion with limited results on the fishing end. But hey, it’s only going to get better and the crowds will disappear … for...

Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Brian “Bucko” Theriot reports on 5.5.2016

Opening weekend finally came and it was sure good to be back on some of the waters I dearly missed over the winter. I was guiding over at Clearwater lodge Friday and Saturday and made it over to the Upper Sac on Sunday 5/1. I played around in the wild trout section on the Upper Sac and it fished fair to good. I did see lots of Salmonflies! There is some dry...

Bucko Theriot Reports on 4.28.2016

The Upper Sac is shaping up for an exciting spring season and summer. I see more and more Salmonfly exoskeletons each day on the rocks. They aren’t out in big numbers yet, but just wait, it’s right around the corner till you start seeing lots of them crawling and hanging in the trees and cruising on the banks. The river is looking better and more wader friendly as...

Temps are dropping, fingers are numbing, and jaws are shivering… ah how I have missed the cold weather! But don’t let the cold weather scare you off, cause the fishing continues to be great on the upper sac. It’s also fishing better than the McCloud and you don’t need to deal with the crowds! If you fish the upper section of the upper sac, you will find more...

Upper Sac & McCloud Fly Fishing Report

Ted Fay Fly Shop Reports on 7/27/2015

There is plenty of water up here, all of our streams are flowing at healthy levels and the trout are enjoying the cool water during the warm summer. The McCloud River has unfortunately … once again … gone rogue and   is blown out muddy. Figure this river not being fishable for awhile ( UPDATE 7/30/2015 John rickard of Wild Waters Reports Today the River was...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Anthony Carruesco of AC Fly Fishing Reports on 7.30.2015

Despite the hot weather, the trout fishing up north remains good and at times some would say very good. The Lower Saccontinues to fish well in the early morning hours and in the evenings. Plenty of fish can be hooked midday too, it’s just a bit more comfortable out early and late. The freestone streams are fishing well early in the day as...

McCloud River

Our past week on the Nor Cal rivers has brought successful summer days of fishing for clients. Yes there is plenty of water up here, all of our streams are flowing at healthy levels and the trout are enjoying the cool water during the warm summer. Recent thunderstorms have even added a little flow to the rivers. The McCloud River is running a bit off...

Upper Sac and McCloud Fly Fishing Reports

Ted Fay Reports on 7.11.2015

Hot weather has left the house and cooler days are prevailing. The big 4th of July holiday stampede has come and gone with limited collateral damage and battle scars. Things are settling in nicely now and both of our favorite rivers are giving us some good fishing. Right now is a great time to be here for the fishing and all the other accessories that the area has to...

John Rickard of Wild Waters Fly Fishing Reports on 6.25.2015

The Mt Shasta region has been fishing well this summer. The days are hot and long but there is no better place to be than in a cool river catching trout. June highlights have been the McCloud River. A dry fly fisherman’s dream, The McCloud has had some great hatches this June. We went from salmonflies in the early days of June to golden stones, green drakes, and lately the pmd’s and yellow sallies. Some large fish have crushed some big stone patterns lately, just a couple of those kind of takes is all I need to smile big all day.  The McCloud should remain awesome but expect the upcoming full moon to slow the bite. As the water warms the dead drift becomes less meaningful, swing some soft hackles and hang on.

Meanwhile, other fisheries like the Sacramento have been delighting anglers with some big bows, drift trips on the Lower Sacramento have been great in the mornings or evenings, our guides have been reporting good dry fly action!

What the Hex else is there? Oh yeah, those big yellow mayflies are being eaten by bass and trout nightly. Fifteen minutes of crazy fishing, dont tangle or break one off or you’ll miss the bite.

We have been busy but we still have openings and would love to get you on the water. Check out all these photos from our latest trips and go fish.
