Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Upper Sacramento RiverMay 5, 20161 min read

Brian “Bucko” Theriot reports on 5.5.2016

Opening weekend finally came and it was sure good to be back on some of the waters I dearly missed over the winter. I was guiding over at Clearwater lodge Friday and Saturday and made it over to the Upper Sac on Sunday 5/1. I played around in the wild trout section on the Upper Sac and it fished fair to good. I did see lots of Salmonflies! There is some dry fly action so don’t forget your dry fly box. Some of the fish are tucked right along the edge of the river patiently waiting for Salmonflies to fall in, so chuck big stimulators with a dropper along the edges. I did land a nice rainbow on a big stimulator that was no more than 2 feet from the bank. The fish seemed to love the caddis imitations that day and of course the rubber legs. The flows did drop down to 950 but I just checked and they went back up to 1100 cfs. The river should come back down and some good weather is on the way. It is predicting to be in the low 80s all next week! So come on up and get out and explore the Upper Sac!
