Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Upper Sacramento RiverApr 28, 20161 min read

Bucko Theriot Reports on 4.28.2016

The Upper Sac is shaping up for an exciting spring season and summer. I see more and more Salmonfly exoskeletons each day on the rocks. They aren’t out in big numbers yet, but just wait, it’s right around the corner till you start seeing lots of them crawling and hanging in the trees and cruising on the banks. The river is looking better and more wader friendly as every day passes and has continued to drop. It is currently flowing at 1180 CFS. The Upper Sac is still big and powerful at these flows, so bring a wading staff and a friend. If you are itching to get out here for the opener of the trout season, the weather is going to be great and expected to hit low to mid 70s. This river is a great alternative to the McCloud “McCrowd” river which will surely be crowded on the opener. So come fish the Upper Sac in piece and enjoy the fishing and respect the flows. The flies I recommend: big Rubberlegs 4-8, prince nymphs, micro mayflies, and copper johns. Those flies should see some grabs. I hope everyone has an awesome time this weekend for the trout opener!
