Lower Sac & Yuba Fly Fishing Reports & Skwala Rant

Hogan Brown reports on 2.17.2016

So our northern california typical february pseudo spring has come and hopefully gone. It seems most years that at some point in February the sun comes out and we get some 70+ degree weather but then it gets cold again and winter continues for another few weeks. Problem with the last few years is that weather came in February and never left…hence the drought. This...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Dave Neal reports on 2.17.2016

The Lower Sac has been fishing pretty well most days. After a week of record 80-degree weather we began seeing intense caddis hatches along with multiple species of mayflies popping daily. Throw a little egg bite, in places, into the mix and we have experienced what the river is known for… big, fat, strong, wild rainbow trout!!

This all changed, however, yesterday...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Bucko Theriot reports on 2.17.2016

The Lower Sac has been fishing off the hook the past couple weeks. The weather has been awesome up until today. There is currently a storm rolling through and is dumping lots of rain that will turn to snow tonight up in the higher elevations. The storm is suppose to continue till Friday. But on the bright side, thirsty California is getting more water and there is...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown Reports on 2.10.2016

Fishing has been fair to good. with the warmer weather fishing are eating more constantly throughout the day. There has been a few caddis hatching on warmer days and signs of PMD’s and March Browns on the warmest of days. Weather forecast is clear and warm in the mid 70’s through the weekend but there is a cool down and some rain possible next week so that will change things I am sure. Most fish are coming on flies that correspond to the bugs that are around at any given time…Flashback PT’s when the mayflies around and fox poopas seem to be the best when the caddis are around. Other flies that have been catching fish are varieties of rubber legs and general attractor flies. I have not been below Anderson but will most likely fish Anderson to Balls in the next few days as cow creek should be clear and the river should be fine down to atleast cotton wood creek.

Anyone that is going to the Pleasanton Fly Fishing show don’t forget to stop by the Cast Hope After Party Saturday night at Handles Gastro Pub in Down Town Pleasanton! tickets are $20 and includes food and beer. There will be an amazing auction and raffle with trips to lodges, guide trips, rods, reels, flies, coolers, all sorts of stuff. Check out www.casthope.org to buy tickets, raffle tickets, or even get some early bids in on a few items. Cast Hope will also have a booth all weekend at the show so stop by and see us even if you can’t make the after party!

Lower Sacramento River

River is fishing well down to the cow creek area so mainly Posse to Anderson. Cow and Cotton wood should clear over the next week but it will take awhile as both were pretty high and muddy as of Sunday. The clarity from Bonnie View down to Anderson was about 2-3’ and it was off color enough I did’t have much confidence fishing smaller mayflies...

Bucko Theriot reports on 1.27.2016

The North state received some nice sunny days this week, which made for an awesome time on the river. The fish seemed to enjoy the good weather too! This river is an awesome winter time fishery, which produces some truly big rainbows this time of year. The numbers might not be there but the size of the trout make up for it.  We didn’t start our day till late morning, around 10 or so by the time we started fishing, and the fishing was hot right off the bat. Around 10:30, There was a ton of caddis flying around, which some fearless trout were rising for.  The specials on the menu were eggs and rubber legs. So be sure not to leave the house without a full arsenal of those! Other top menu items were small mayfly imitations, caddis, and midges. The Lower Sac’s most productive months are right around the corner, so be sure to get out there or book a trip!

Lower Sac & Trinity Fly Fishing Report

AC Fly Fishing Reports on 1.28.2016

So, it turns out El Niño is the real deal. The series of storms we’ve had have been pretty relentless. Most of the Steelhead rivers in Northern CA have only had a few days of fishable water this month. Even the Trinity has been blown most of January. It looks like we’re expecting another couple of inches of rain in the next two days that will likely render the...

AC Fly Fishing reports:

Lower Sac has been stellar this winter. I can’t imagine a better winter trout destination in the state. Dark, damp weather usually brings out the tanks.
Steelhead season continues to unfold nicely on the Trinity. Still very good numbers of fish around. Consistently seeing more wild fish these days.

Lower Sac & Yuba Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown Reports on 1/13/2104

Lower Sacramento River: The Lower Sac hasn’t changed much sense my last post outside of the weather has been a bit warmer on average. For a few weeks it was really cold, in the low 40’s in Redding and the fish really seemed to only be active during the warmest part of the day. The last time I was on the river it was a bit more consistent throughout the day as the...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 1.6.2015

Again I have been spending most of my time on the Lower Sacramento River outside of Redding and Anderson. Fishing has been fair to good, pretty typical winter trout fishing….Bite is best midday when the weather is warmest and then can get tough morning/evening when it is cold. Most fish have been coming on Pheasant Tail variations and the occasional rubber leg lower...
