Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Jon Baiocchi reports on 5.3.18

Truckee

The flows have been slowly dropping on the Truckee River the last few weeks, we’ve had some warmer days where there is more of a melt of the snowpack, and coolers days where there is not as much. Flows as of 4/30 in the upper watershed are running at 490 cubes, east of town they are at 991 cfs, and down in the canyon the flows are 1,050 cfs.

Water is clear for...

Truckee River

Good spring fishing on the Truckee River.

The season trout opener was Saturday, though most folks fish year round these days on the bigger rivers. The Truckee River is open from Lake Tahoe all the way down now.

Flows are nearing 1000 cfs here in the Hirsch. Getting closer to normal, though you never know what normal is in the spring with runoff and...

Flows are dropping.

Flows continue to drop and the water is crystal clear on the Truckee River.

With the flows dropping it opens up the whole river including the Nevada side. Good, because that opens up a lot of river for me to guide and when most of those fish haven’t seen a fly in a few months, it’s game time.

1,450 k here in the Hirsh. Down from 4,400 k last week,...

Truckee

Lots of water in the ole Truckee River.

Flows got big Saturday morning, about 6,200 cfs or so. Not as big as last January when they crested at just over 9000k here in the Hirsch. They’re back down to about 4,300 k or something like that now. Kinda just like last year, high water and really good fishing. Yes, I said really good fishing.

They’re still dumping a ton...

Truckee River

Well to say runoff is in full swing would be an understatement.  As many of you know it kicked off a few weeks ago with a big rain-on-snow event,  followed by two weeks of 50 and 60-degree weather.

Flows are in the neighborhood of 2500-4500 CFS between Truckee and the upper canyon. For many, this is a great time to stock up on some last minute fly tying...

Big spring flows on the Truckee River.

About 2,300 cfs here in the Hirsch. Lots of water getting dumped out of Lake Tahoe. We all know how good the fishing was last spring in the high flows. Kinda your chance to hook those trophy trouts.

Weathers have been nice, looks like rain this weekend, look for a big bump in flows.

Anywhere you can find slack water you should find...

Truckee River

It’s great to be back working the Truckee River again, and with the high flows and another atmospheric river approaching, it’s amazing how productive the fishing can be there with big water. Currently, the flows along Glenshire drive are at 1,940 cubes, Boca Bridge is at 3,420, and near the bottom of the canyon, Farad is running at 3,610 cfs. Water temps...

Truckee River

Coming off a pretty good week on the Truckee River.

Hard to say what this week looks like with all the rain and snow coming. Should blow up the river a bit with these warmer storms. Will be good for fishing though. Spring flows are the time to get them big trout. I love that muddy water.

Like always in higher water fish the edges, fish streamers, and just...

More cold and snow on the Truckee River.

Ain’t much to report since last report.

This week looks to be the same as last week with the exception of a big storm by weeks end. So more cold and snow and ice in the guides type of winter fishing. That’s ok, we really need the snow.

If you plan on fishing think small midges, mayflies, worms and eggs. Fish the during...

Lower Yuba Fly Fishing Report

Jon Baiocchi Reports on 2.15.2018

Cooler weather and a dusting of snow here in Nevada city on Monday morning, north wind had a bite to it as well. Making good upstream presentations posed major problems too, but a switch in tactics with a downstream fly first delivery solved the war against the wind. Flows have been stable for the most part on the Lower Yuba River and are currently flowing at 950...
