Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 12.22.2016

Lower Sacramento River -

Been on the Lower Sac from Bonnieview Boat Ramp to Anderson Boat Ramp as I think the river below Cow Creek is still a bit off color. Fishing has been hit or miss. One spot fishes really well then the next 5-8 don’t give up a fish…The Baetis hatch has been spotty at best though most fish are coming on smaller mayfly nymphs. Seems to be...

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson reports on 12.22.2016

Has anyone ever had a close encounter of the bovine kind? Let me explain. I was guiding a client on the Lower Owens River and was rammed by a cow! I inadvertently startled her coming out of the willows but instead of loping off in an another direction as they usually do, she ran full steam at me, lowered her head, and hit me square in my chest. I went airborne,...

Trinity River:

Clarity: Good to getting perfect

Flows:
Lewiston - 300cfs steady
Bucktail - 500cfs and dropping
Douglas City - 775cfs and dropping
Junction City - 1600cfs and dropping

Wow, the past few weeks on the Trinity have been extremely good to Nor Cal Fly Guides clients. While others have been working hard to find fish, we have consistently hooked a half a dozen...

Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report

Richard loft reports on 12-19-2016

Hi Everyone Merry Christmas.  Here’s my Holiday Putah Creek report for November, 2016.
Winter has finally arrived and with it flows on Putah Creek have stabilized at 80 cfs and fishing is still good. I teach an “Introduction to Fly Fishing” a couple times a year for Napa Parks and recreation and I took one of my students out to the creek and we found some fish–...

Yosemite Fly Fishing Report

Rick Mazaira reports 12.19.2016

winter storm watch is in effect with a flood notice in Yosemite.

Mokelumne- Closed till Jan 1st- With the fishing season on the Mokelumne over for 2016, I guess I should report on the salmon / steelhead migration. EBMUD had allocated several thousand acre feet of water held back in Camanche Reservoir for pulse flows to attract the salmon into the Mokelumne system. As...

Butte Creek Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 12.15.2016

is dropping from 600cfs but will most likely shoot up again with the coming rain. Good news is all this water is going to be moving winter steelhead up river. January should be a great month if the creek comes into shape.

Lower Yuba River Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 12.15.2016

The Lower Yuba River is at 5000cfs and dropping but with more rain and water on the way this week not sure how that is going to go. The South Fork of the Yuba River is pumping big time and pumping all sorts of mud and debris into Englebright which will most likely muddy up the river for a while. That said I feel comfortable fishing river around 2500-3000cfs with a...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 12.15.2016

is fishable in the top few floats even with the massive push of water from this last storm set. I think the Lower Sac is going to be the main game for a while as long as the Yuba is high. Dec and January are great months on the Lower Sac and provide some of the biggest fish of the year for anglers. Not a huge numbers game but good fish.

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson reports on 12.15.2016

Lower Owens River

The Lower Owens is flowing at 75 cfs. This is on the low side but the wading is easy and the trout are hungry. With the background peaks cloaked with fresh snow, Bishop is a nice place to wet a line. Try a hopper-dropper combo with either a black zebra midge or micro mayfly on the bottom. Money! There is also a nice midday surface hatch along the...
