Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Lower Sacramento RiverDec 22, 20161 min read

Hogan Brown reports on 12.22.2016

Lower Sacramento River -

Been on the Lower Sac from Bonnieview Boat Ramp to Anderson Boat Ramp as I think the river below Cow Creek is still a bit off color. Fishing has been hit or miss. One spot fishes really well then the next 5-8 don’t give up a fish…The Baetis hatch has been spotty at best though most fish are coming on smaller mayfly nymphs. Seems to be overall pretty typical winter trout fishing on the Lower Sac…Can be really good at times or given days then can be really tough on others. Flows just got kicked up today (21 Dec) up to 10,000cfs from 5500cfs or so out of Keswick.

Butte Creek -

Flows are dropping daily and are around 700cfs. Fished it a few days as it has been dropping and fishing is fair to improving. Most days we are averaging a 1-2 steelhead with a few resident trout mixed in. Catching fish both nymph fishing and swinging traditional steelhead flies. Wading is a bit tough but if you know the creek and which side you want to be on you can find fishable water. Fishing should continue to improve as creek drops. Dec-Feb 15 is prime winter steelhead fishing on Butte Creek
