The Eastern Sierra is looking very winter like. Even where I live in Crowley Lake, the rain shadow, we received roughly 8” of snow from that storm system that arrived before the holidays. Now that the front has passed we are getting frigid Arctic air settling into the basins. The Upper Owens River has had morning temperatures hovering near -10º F. It is cold out...

I trust everyone had a great Christmas and may the New Year bring us all health, prosperity, and happiness.
With the 2017 Steelhead and Trout Season opening next Sunday, I thought I would pass on a few thoughts.

Cold is the word, around -15 the other night here in the Hirsch on the Truckee River. High’s have been in the 20’s.
Temps should get back into the 40’s by weeks end.
A little anchor ice/ shelf ice in some spots along the river but despite the cold temps not much. So that being said you can go out and get some fish right now. Probably not best to start out...

As the holidays season wanes a few fish are trickling in to our coastal systems. I think we are still in the beginning though. Conditions this week have been great! Little bumps of rain have kept a touch of color in the systems - I’m ready for more though. Any day now we should see a few more fish show up. I have some folks on the short call list when they...

Delta fishing was slower this week for me and my clients. I think fishing will rebound within a week. Once the Stripers acclimate to the colder water they will return to normal feeding patterns. If you want numbers try a smaller fly and if you are after one big one maybe try an extra large fly.
This is a really fun time to explore the vastness and beauty of...

A Christmas miracle on the Truckee - This has to be without a doubt one of the best weeks of fishing on the Truckee in years. We all knew that the back to back floods in the last month were what the Truckee needed, but had no idea it would recharge the the river as well as it has.
Flows are absolutely perfect and the river is running between 250 and 420cfs between...

Some good news concerning the Lower Yuba River came the morning of the 29th as the flows were nearly cut in half dropping down to 2, 104 cubes. When I saw the graphs at 6am while drinking a thick cup of Joe, I made plans to get a firsthand look at the conditions of the river. Surprisingly all the puddles on the south road had ice on them as I made way getting...

Delta fishing can be good if you find the fish. The San Joaquin is clear in most parts Water temps are varied between 45 and 52 degrees depending on location and time of day A 4 inch fly will get the numbers if you can locate the fish.

“Perch bite has been good, big females close to shore. Surf conditions have been small as of late but I expect it to get much bigger as we dive deeper into winter. Its great time for perch,...
