Hogan Brown, Hogan Brown Fly Fishing

Spent the Weekend guiding the Lower Feather for spring steelhead. I spend most of my time swinging for these fish as they are some of the better “swung fly eaters” in the central valley. We managed a few missed grabs and a nice 4lb wild adult hen about 24" on saturday. Swinging bait fish style flies in white and olive or caddis pupa/soft hackles is best.

The Fall River has been fishing tough the past few weeks with fish moving throughout the system. The middle of the day has been most productive nymphing with small Mayflies and Midges.

The top photo is from Fall River guide Art Teter. The bottom two are from close friend Val Atkinson. The Fall River is living up to its name and fishing really well right now. PMD’s and BWO are beginning to pop and the fish have been big. The best part is no one is up there! So if you love the Fall River get up there.

Almost 100% spring fed and one of the largest spring systems in the world. The water level is actually the highest that I have seen this year! There really is no change in tactics on this river, because its cold and flowing. My best advice is to get up here and fish it! Sure the fish have spread out a bit, but they are very willing to take a properly presented fly....

Getting a bit more difficult as the fish have spread out through the entire system. If you find some grabby fish stay on them. The PMD hatch still hasn’t been amazing but you can find heads if you are willing to hunt for them. Spent Sunday on the lower portion of the Fall River and despite having some decent fishing for a few hours, the smoke from the surrounding fires was nearly unbearable at times. Day-to-day conditions may change due to winds, fire containment, etc. So if you are in the area, you will have to hope for the best and make decisions on fishing for yourself.
