Deschutes River / Owyhee Fly Fishing Report

DESCHUTES

The Salmon Fly hatch is still cranking on the Deschutes. This is the latest the big bugs have stuck around these parts since the 2009 season. The amazing thing is that they are still here but the bulk of the people are all but gone. We’ve probably got a good week to 10 days left of good dry fly fishing with the salmon.

Next up on the Deschutes is our caddis and mayfly season. If you like...

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell reports on 4.20.17

Deschutes RiverIt’s that time of year again. As of Saturday all 100 miles of the Lower Deschutes will be open for business. The sections that have already been open have been fishing good, despite the higher water we’ve had this spring. Out of the dams the flows have dropped to around 6200cfs in the past week, which has opened up several more spots. Most days...

Deschutes RiverIt’s that time of the year again. April 22nd is opening day on the Lower Deschutes. If you enjoy nymphing for trout you do not want to miss the first couple of weeks of the season. The fish should be good and hungry, and a bit on the dumb side of things since they haven’t been fished for in months. On top of what should be some great nymphing, you...

Spring Time !!

Spring is starting early this year. With the snow pack bigger than we’ve seen in years, temps warmer than average for mid-March and rain added to the mix, most of the rivers in Oregon are getting bigger by the second. The bad news is from the looks of things, the Owyhee and it’s Skwala hatch is going the way of the dodo this season. Because of all the...

Deschutes River
Sorry for the lack of reports. Hitting the river so far this year has been a bit trickier than normal due to the all the snow and crazy weather we’ve been having. But with the few nicer days we’ve had lately, we did manage to get out and fish for a couple hours. Fishing is by no means red hot yet, but we managed to stumble into a few fish on dry flies....

I want to thank everyone who fished with us in 2016. And for those of you who weren’t able to make in out to the Deschutes or the Owyhee with us last year we hope to see this year.

With all the snow we’ve been getting here in Oregon for the past month and a half, we’ve been hitting the slopes more than the river. But if you are like me, now that the holidays are over,...

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell Reports 11.24.16

Fall is by far my favorite time of the year to be on the Deschutes. There are still plenty of trout still willing to play, or you can fish for the ever elusive steelhead. When we hit the river yesterday we weren’t sure if we wanted to fish for trout or steelhead. So we decided to string up a nymph rod and see what would bite.
We ended up landing several of really...

Yah it’s true, the number of steelhead in the Deschutes is definitely down this season. The good news is that the average size of the fish have been bigger than normal. This year we have seen a fair bit more two salt fish than normal. Sometimes less fish in the river isn’t always a bad thing.

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell, at Deschutes Angler, Reports on 8.4.2016

It’s a pretty easy game, cast it out there, maybe throw a mend in it and hold on!
It’s that easy. Sometimes.

The fish of a 1000 casts. There are days you can’t buy a bite and wonder if there’s even a fish in the river. Then you hit that one magical day and you can do no wrong. The bite is on and you are hooking a steelhead every other spot. It’s...

Deschutes River

There are already some steel poking their heads into the Deschutes. There has already been a few caught up as far as Macks Canyon. But the bulk of them are still on there way so it’s still a touch early to put the trout rods away and switch to steelhead. The steelhead fishing doesn’t fully ramp up until mid august, but that’s just a few weeks away....
