Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell reports on 9.17.2015

For one of the hottest, driest years on record, the Deschutes River is in great shape. Down from the White River, the Deschutes is as clean and clear as its been all steelhead season. And to top things off the water temps are as good as we could ask for. In the mornings the water temps are in the low 60’s. By the end of the day the water temps are hitting mid 60’s....

Deschutes Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell reports on 9.9.2015

Steelhead It is primetime steelheading on the Deschutes. The water has changed from a chocolate milk color into a perfect steelhead green. There is over two feet of visibility in the water. The White River is still kicking some mud into the Deschutes but it’s helping more than hurting.

Because the White River has muddied up the Deschutes so much this season,...

Leslie Ajari reports on September 7, 2015

This past Labor Day weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting a trip with Travis Johnson and his company All Waters Angling. We floated and camped on the Lower Deschutes river. This river is regulated for bank fishing only, which meant fishing from the boat was not an option. No problem here! With the big water and bouldery riffles, spey casting is by far the most effective way to fish this water; not to mention the most fun.

Travis is the world record holder for spey casting and an excellent guide and instructor. The river conditions were excellent. With Travis’ help and that of fellow guide Caleb Lockyer, everyone was able to improve their spey casting, learn more about the river, and have some fishy encounters. Not to mention excellent cuisine and lots of laughs. I know I’m already looking forward to next year!

Steelhead

Here’s the plain and simple of what’s happening on the Deschutes. The river is clearing up, the days are getting shorter and the weather is cooling and is partly cloudy. And if that’s not good enough for you, there seems to be quite a few fish in the river and they are on the bite. What more could any steelheader want. With the Deschutes running colder than...

Cory Godell Reports 8.25.2015

The steelhead season is now in full swing. Like most years around this time, the White River is acting up and is kicking mud into the Deschutes. When it does this, some days it kicks so much mud the Deschutes is un-fishable. Other days it does nothing more than put a little extra color in the Deschutes. Remember if you can see two feet in the river, the fish can see...

Deschutes & John Day  Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell Reports on 7.28.2015:

John Day River

If you want to catch a pile of small mouth bass, it’s time to head for the John Day River. The smallies are slamming everything that is below the surface. The Dries or surface bite, is picking up each day as the river clears up. It has been a bit slow because. Just under about 10 days ago a thunder storm hit the John Day and blew out the main stem....

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell reports on 6/30/15 :

If you haven’t got you trout fix yet, there’s still plenty time. The trout fishing on the Deschutes should continue to fish good on through August. Even though we didn’t get our usual snowpack this year, the Deschutes is flowing strong and will continue to do so through the rest of the season. With all the hot, hot weather we’ve been having the caddis hatches have...

Trout
With the crazy winter we had and the warmer than average spring we are having, the hatches on the Deschutes have been put in overdrive. Normally right now the salmon fly hatch is just about to hit primetime. But this year we are already on the back end of the hatch. The salmon fly fishing is still good and should continue to be good for the next week or better. But with the salmon fly hatch...

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

The salmon fly season is here and kicking into high gear fast. This is the first year I’ve ever seen a Salmon Fly on the Lower Deschutes above the town of Maupin before the 1st of May. Fortunately, the bulk of the trout aren’t fully locked on the big bugs yet. But it’s just a matter of days until they are. If you want a chance to catch fish on salmon flies...

Deschutes River Fly Fishing Report

Cory Godell, Deschutes River Anglers

It’s that time of the year. Opening day for the Lower Deschutes is just around the corner. The long term forecast is saying that there are some clouds coming in with a slight chance of rain. If this weather doesn’t change it should really help get the fishing going good. If we do get some rain, keep your eyes peeled for some BWO’s, and there’s a chance of some... Continue reading
