Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing Report

Anthony Carruesco, AC Fly Fishing

The Lower Sacramento River continues to fish well despite the weird weather we’ve had. The hatches have yet to really get going but the fish have been eating well, regardless. The fish seem pretty podded up in certain spots of the river so it is important to know where these spots will be. Still anticipating the Dry fly thing to happen soon. We’ve had some fun...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

We’ve had some banner days on the Sac in the past couple of weeks. Typical Lower Sac for the springtime (minus the big hatches). A few of the days have made us work hard in the mornings - usually after lunchtime the fish start to chow with more conviction and seem to hold on a bit longer. Quick grabs mean you’ve gotta have a quick hammer. Timely hook sets have been...

John Rickard, Wild Waters Fly Fishing

March has arrived here in Northern California/Southern Oregon and we are seeing the continuation of great steelhead fishing and the uptick in trout fishing on the Lower and Upper Sacramento Rivers. Blooming flowers and trees are offering a color show after their winter hibernation along with mild warmer days. Winter steelhead are continuing to reward those...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Spring weather is here and the status of fishing on the Lower Sac has been bumped to Excellent. We’ve had some great days out on the water recently. Daytime temperatures have been in the high 70s, boat traffic has been light and the fish have been eager. Despite the lack of hatches, the rainbows have been aggressive to our bugs. With the temperatures forecasted to...

Spring fishing conditions on the Lower Sac have arrived. The past few days have been stellar. The water is far from gin clear but the fish can see plenty good to pick up your bug.. if it’s in the right spot. With the extended forecast predicting more warm weather, the Brachycentrus Caddis should start to happen.

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

We had some solid rain up here the past few days. Damn, it feels good to see the skies open up like this finally. It’s been a long time coming. Flows from Keswick are down to 3,500 cubes (Which is nice and low) and expected to stay here for most of the winter. I was on the river for a few days recently with a couple of new anglers. The river fished very well for...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown, Hogan Brown Fly Fishing

Fishing has been pretty consistently fair if you balance out the tough days and good days…the last rains blew out the lower river for a few days and the forecasted rain coming in this weekend should blow out the river for a while as well. The river seems to have entered into its winter period where one day can be good the next fair. The Lower river around Red...

Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report

Lower Sac - Spent most of my time fishing from Red Bluff down river where clarity is much better. Up through Redding/Anderson clarity is a big issue as the lake is blown out from the last few rains. I imagine with the forecasted rain over the next few days the whole system may blow but who knows. There are good numbers of trout spread out down stream of red...

Bruce Bell reports: The half-pounders were hitting the nymphs,...

Bruce Bell reports: The half-pounders were hitting the nymphs, such as the prince nymph. The big fish were hitting the egg patterns (yellow). The first day we drifted from Iron Gate Dam down to the first bridge, and Kevin caught the 22  inch fish that you see. The second day we drifted from that bridge down to the I-5 bridge, and Kevin caught a 20 inch steelhead and was spooled by a 30+ inch fish. Remarkable …. Then we fished the Sac through Redding, and not even a single bite!
