Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report
Anthony Carruesco, AC Fly Fishing
We’ve had some banner days on the Sac in the past couple of weeks. Typical Lower Sac for the springtime (minus the big hatches). A few of the days have made us work hard in the mornings - usually after lunchtime the fish start to chow with more conviction and seem to hold on a bit longer. Quick grabs mean you’ve gotta have a quick hammer. Timely hook sets have been rewarded. Due to the lack of bugs still, the dry fly thing hasn’t really kicked off yet. Until then we’ll keep watching that indicator go down - often. I’ve still got some days open at the end of the month and days open in April. Inquire for details.

There’s a new species of fish around right now.. Not a bad change of pace to throw some big streamers in the afternoon to some fish with big mouths.

Been on the Lower Sac a few days up out of Anderson Trout fishing. Trout fishing has been good to great depending on the day and the anglers. All fish are coming on nymphs fished out of the drift boat, typical lower Sac fishing, on the March Madness nymph, S&M PMD nymph, rubber legs, and various egg patterns. Clarity is about a few feet and fish seem to be eating eggs and bigger bugs vs. the smaller mayfly and caddis patterns that I have fished. On warmer days the afternoon caddis hatch has been decent but for the most part the bite seems to be best from 9-1pm.
Lower Sac stripers are moving up and waking up. There a few early migratory fish south of colusa and fish should be showing up in greater numbers over the next few weeks. Resident fish are getting going and there are stripers, smallmouth, and largemouth bass for the catching farther north up by Chico, Ca and even a few of the creeks up by anderson are kicking out some really nice smallmouth and spotted bass. Stripers, Largemouth, and Smallmouth fishing should be getting going over the next few weeks and role right into may and shad season. Prime striper season is mid June-sept. Prime shad season is May through first part of June.
