Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing

Wildwater’s Fly Fishing Reports on 1.4.2018

The Upper Sacramento River

I have had the opportunity to winter fish the Upper Sacramento River since it opened to year round fishing a few years ago. She can be a tempermental thing with a lot of pulse flows but when we have these drier years such as now the fishing on it can be extremely good, particularly for those elusive big fish that you always hear...

Ted Fay Fly Shop Reports on 10.26.2017

October has been spectacular in many ways here in Dogpatch. Unlike the pain in the ass conditions of last year with the record setting rains early on this year has been very kind weather and fishing wise. The beautiful Fall colors seem to be matching what you would see in New England, the temps have been very comfortable and the fishing has produced some of...

McCloud Upper Sac Fly Fishing Report

Brian “Bucko” Theriot Reports on 10.10.17

We are finally transitioning into cooler weather after a blazing hot summer. We have had 80 degree weather the past couple days, but that is soon to change to high 60s and low 70s starting Friday; we will even see mid 30s as the low for night time temps! I will finally have to start wearing my waders consistently now with the cooler temps. As the fishing...

Upper Sac & McCloud Fly Fishing Reports

Ted Fays Fly Shop Reports on 8.30.2017

The worm is turning on our local rivers and the Dog Daze of Summer is being shown the door. We are seeing some very nice fish being brought to the net on the McCloud, Upper Sacramento and Pit Rivers. The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler, just the recipe for waking up the fish and turning up their taste buds. Hatches still have to wait...

Upper Sacramento and McCloud Fly Fishing Report

Rick Cox reports on 8.10.17

The beauty of fishing our rivers these days is the lack of people fishing, we have had recent days where we haven’t seen another soul on the water… believe me not complaining. The recent hot spell is behind us now and temps are hanging around highs of 90 degrees with some afternoon thunderstorm activity. I like these types of days, the humidity increase along with...

Upper Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

8.4.2017

The Upper Sacramento River is fishing very well. Focus on tight line nymphing techniques (USE SSG weights 1.6 grams)  in the morning and afternoon. Fish all the little pockets and you will find fish. Small stones, caddis and mayfly patterns were all on the lunch ticket.

Cover a lot of water and you will catch a lot of fish. We fished just downstream of Mosbrea Falls and up river. The Dry...

McCloud, Upper Sac Report

7.27.2017

Fishing on the Upper Sac and McCloud are in very similar places. Hot weather and full sun will make fishing difficult. In the Middle of the day get your flies down. Fish a range of PMD’s, Caddis, Yellow Sallies and LBS (little black shit). Hunt for shade, deeper pools, and white water. Cover a lot of water and you will be rewarded.

The water on the upper sac is clear so fish longer and...

Dog Daze officially here. Best fishing has been mornings and evenings. If you must get out there during the peak of the day when the sun is directly overhead seek out the heavy, oxygenated, frothy water. The fish on both the McCloud and Upper Sac love this type of water during midday. Little Black Shit has been working the best … remember get...

Upper Sacramento Fishing Report

LCO Reports 7/6/2017

A great year to be on the Upper Sacramento River. It’s going to be hard to catch fish unless you find shade or wait until the evening. You will find fish looking up in the evening. If you can’t find shade during the day your next best bet will be to high stick fast or deep water.
