Trinity River and Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing Report

Dave Neal Reports on 4.6.17

Lower Sacramento-

Good news for Lower Sac fans… the water clarity in the river improved last week enough that we fished the river for the first time in several months. Water flows are currently 10k and clarity is about 18” – finally turning more a shade of green from the pervasive brown water that persisted all winter long.

Weather earlier this week was awesome with highs...

Lower Sacramento River-

It’s been a long wait for anglers on the Lower Sacramento River… and there just might be a turning point on the horizon.

I went for a mtn. bike ride the other day by Shasta Dam and the Centimudi area and noticed the lake is FINALLY beginning to clear. Water conditions on the lake are currently green with visibility two about 2’ or slightly better.

Life on the Trinity remains much the same as it has all winter, high water and a few fish around to keep hope alive. The end of proper steelhead season is upon us but much of the Trinity remains open through spring so check your regs and get after it. The fish don’t have any concept of our calendar so go find a rosy steelie or elusive butter bellied brown.

Trinity River Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.23.17

Steelhead season is winding down everywhere but on the Trinity the beat goes on. It hasn’t been the best season for sure, but there are still a few steelies and the odd brown around to bend your rod.

Flows are quite high, but what else is new? Stick to the upper river from the fly-only water down to Douglas City area. Despite the high water, the river is...

Northern CA, Trinity & Lower Sacramento Rivers 3-9

In between the storms I’ve been on the Trinity River quite a few days this past week. We saw a little snow and a little rain but it didn’t affect the flows all that much. We’ve been fishing all over the river despite the big water from DC thru JC; it’s been fun running super long floats and covering lots of miles with the...

The Trinity is dropping, albeit very slowly. All the little creeks along the way are still pumping lots of water. The surrounding mountains have plenty of snow and water filtering downhill, into the river.

The way upper, think Steel Bridge area, is still in good shape and putting out a few fish. If you go be prepared for company. As you can see from the...

Trinity and Lower Sac Report

Dave Neal Reports on 2.23.2017

Well, not much to report this week other than the last few days the sun finally came out and it has been a welcome sight. It’s incredible how much rain we have endured these past 6-8 weeks in Northern California. I read in the paper today that Redding received 37.5" of rainfall since October 1st and recorded 7" in February alone.

Desperate times for a fishing guide in...

Here’s a couple of current graphs from the Trinity and Smith, though this describes the entire winter, with rivers almost dropping into shape just to blow out again.

The Trinity above Douglas City continues to be in shape with a few fish around, and plenty of desperate anglers.

Wet conditions are predicted across Nor Cal for the next week, so we need to look...

Lower Sac and Trinity Fly Fishing Report

Dave Neal reports on 2.9.2017

*I just got word that the Lower Sac releases out of Keswick Dam are going to go way up beginning Friday to 50,000cfs, Saturday 60,000cfs and Sunday to 70,000cfs!

Well… it could stop raining tomorrow and I wouldn’t mind one bit. I think for a while we are probably good on precipitation in northern California. I’d love to see it clear and sunny for 7-10 full days and see...

Trinity River Fly Fishing Report

Brian Clemens reports on 2.9.17

This year has been a crazy wet mess so I hope all of you have stayed safe and dry while mother nature shows us her fury. With this wet season, most of you know it has left almost all of Northern California blown out and too high to fish. With more coming down, it doesn’t look like the Sac Valley will clear up anytime soon. However, there has been a glimmer of hope,...
