Delta Fly Fishing Report

Bryce Tedford Reports on 9.12.19

Prime Striper fishing is just around the corner. September 15-December 15 is typically very, very good! Striper fishing is beginning to pickup, schools of smaller fish are throughout the Delta feeding on Threadfin Shad. I like to use crease flies on top when I find feeding schools of fish, super fun on light rods! In addition, some Large Stripers can be found here & there if you are willing to work for them. For large Striper hunting I like Intermediate or type 3 lines with Steve Adachi style Rattle Clouser type flies. Topwater Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass has begun to slow down. You can still get a good bite but warm evenings are your best bet.

Delta wind   has been impacting our ability to fish multiple  high percentage spots.  September is the month when we can draw more moderate wind conditions.  Despite the wind we are still catching a few nice fish.  Better numbers of fish should arrive with this upcoming full moon.

Delta fishing is starting to shape up.  You can catch all species of Bass.  Some big Stripers are frequenting the Delta.  Largemouth Bass are available but are challenging.  Smallmouth Bass is your best bet for good action.  Water temps are low 70's in the West Delta and goes up to the 75 degree range in the interior Delta.  The temps are a couple of degrees low for a average year.

Delta Fishing Report:

Just Bassin around these days!!! Hot summer days have set in do Topwater Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass is on the Menu! For Largemouth I focus on higher tides in the am or pm hrs with larger 1/0-4/0 Frog patterns being my go to patterns. For Smallmouth I like outgoing tides using size 6-8 poppers in various colors such as orange, white or black. Other Smallmouth tactics include smaller weighted subsurface patterns or dropping small leeches off of the poppers themselves. The Smallmouth trips are super fun for seasoned anglers & a great way to get newer people into the sport of fly fishing!

Largemouth and Smallmouth fishing is the best bet for Delta fly fishing.  There are a few Stripers that can be caught if you are able to pick a low wind day.  Striper fishing will pick up in August and will get strong in September.  August and September  are good months to catch a  quality Striper.  Now is the time to plan your year and pick out some quality dates for Delta fly fishing.

Delta Fishing Report:

Striper fishing in the Delta has slowed a bit as Spring Striper season winds down. Still getting sone smaller fish with some medium size fish mixed in but we are having to work for them & larger fish are tough to come bye. The good news is weather has settled down & we are seeing many sunny days as we approach 98 degrees. This means Topwater Largemouth Bass are starting to happen! As water temperatures stabilize above 70 degrees the Largemouth Topwater action will keep getting better! For Largemouth I focus on higher tides in the am or pm hrs. Smallmouth are still a ways off as we wait for the rivers to go down from runoff & warm up to 70 degrees or so. For Stripers sub surface I continue to use 1/0-3/0 “Steve Adachi” style rattle Clouser flies in various color combinations. For Largemouth I like Topwater frog patterns in various sizes & patterns.
