Lower Sac and Trinity River Fly Fishing Report

Dave Neal reports on 3.10.17

Lower Sacramento River-

It’s been a long wait for anglers on the Lower Sacramento River… and there just might be a turning point on the horizon.

I went for a mtn. bike ride the other day by Shasta Dam and the Centimudi area and noticed the lake is FINALLY beginning to clear. Water conditions on the lake are currently green with visibility two about 2’ or slightly better.

T...

Lower Sacramento Trout Fishing
– Flows coming out of Keswick are 8410cfs and steady. This is a GREAT flow and more than fishable. If anything a bit on the lower side. That said, the clarity is the issue. Lake Shasta is muddy and therefore the river is muddy coming out of the dam. I know there are people getting out and catching a few fish but nothing that I have heard...

Lower Sac and Sierra Foothills Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 3.16.17

Still chasing some bass out on the Oroville Afterbay. Found water in the 50-62 degree range so a HUGE fluctuation throughout the lake. Clarity is still way off so fishing slow and meticulous, with dark flies with a rattle is best. Water levels fluctuated A LOT over the last 2 weeks and the fish have been on and off the bite as I think they are fluctuating on and off...

Northern CA, Trinity & Lower Sacramento Rivers 3-9

In between the storms I’ve been on the Trinity River quite a few days this past week. We saw a little snow and a little rain but it didn’t affect the flows all that much. We’ve been fishing all over the river despite the big water from DC thru JC; it’s been fun running super long floats and covering lots of miles with the...

Yuba, Feather and Bass Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 3.9.17

While the Yuba, Feather, and Sac are dropping clarity and flow still remain issues.

The Yuba around 3500cfs is tempting as it seems to have the best clarity. I have guided/fished the Lower Yuba around 3500 and done very well, usually doing a double float between the bridge and Sycamore but from what I have heard Sycamore take out is not open yet so floating it is not an...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Anthony Carruesco reports on 3.8.17

Well, there seems to finally be some good news on the horizon for anglers in Northern California. Weather for the foreseeable future is looking to stabilize in the coming days. There are a couple very weak systems in the mix, with most of the weather looking to be partly sunny and in the 60s and 70s. What a welcomed change of pace that is going to be.

As the Lower...

Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Lost Coast Outfitters reports on 3.2.17

Pretty much crickets out there. Running 60,000cfs right now so… The fishing is happening not-so-much.

Lake Shasta is just about full, and with so much runoff coming, the Sac is going to be high for a while. Now, if it drops to like 20-30k and clear the streamer fishing can be killer. That’s still really high flow to be sure, but it gives us a target and...

Sacramento Valley Fly Fishing Report

Hogan Brown reports on 3.2.17

Fishing has been tough but if you get out and look and the weather cooperates you can find some fishable water. For us north staters all the rivers are toast as most will report. I have heard that the Trinity and coast maybe opening up a bit but the Feather, Sac, Yuba are all pumping…I have been exploring our local bass lakes…Black Butte, East Park Reservoir, and...

Trinity and Lower Sac Report

Dave Neal Reports on 2.23.2017

Well, not much to report this week other than the last few days the sun finally came out and it has been a welcome sight. It’s incredible how much rain we have endured these past 6-8 weeks in Northern California. I read in the paper today that Redding received 37.5" of rainfall since October 1st and recorded 7" in February alone.

Desperate times for a fishing guide in...

Lower Sac Update

The  folks at Off the Hook Fly Fishing took this photo yesterday at the Sundial Bridge in Redding.

The flows out of Keswick have actually dropped to 49,000cfs, down from about 80,000cfs just a couple days ago. With Lake Shasta almost full, the powers that be are flushing water to make sure we don’t have a Feather repeat. It’s still too big to fish, but...
