The rivers running off Mt. Shasta are all starting to come into play for the season.  We do expect the upcoming, hot weather to bump some flows up due to snow melt, mostly on the Upper Sac and its feeder creeks.  We have been fishing from the raft and from shore.  Hatches of stoneflies and mayflies become more prolific everyday spring approaches.

The Upper and Lower Sac are running big but fish are being caught. The Lower Sac went back up to 13,000cfs over the weekend but the fish did not seem to be bothered. It’s A great time to be out on it while the temps are mild. A recent trip on it used a combo of running drifts from the boat and getting out to fish buckets and side channels …. very effective...

Upper Sac 

This week we have had some incredible weather and have taken full advantage of it—I even found myself wet wading. I did a couple days on the Upper Sac this week and the fishing was ok. The river is still big and currently flowing at 3390 cfs; two days ago it was at 2300 cfs, So it jumped up a thousand cfs since the 1st. 

You have to pick your spots wisely...

The upper sac is flowing big but fishable. Angler’s throwing Salmon fly nymphs on the soft edges are finding fish on the Upper Sacramento river right now. Fish are even looking up!

The Upper Sac is clear and fishable and 70 degree weather is in the forecast for this weekend. Should be a great weekend to walk and wade the Upper Sac. Flies that have been working: rubber legs, pheasant tails, midges, and other small mayfly patterns.

Familiar refrain on the Upper Sac too, still a bit high to fish. We’d like to see about half the volume. 1400cfs is historical average right now, so we’re headed on the right path. If we get some dry and not too warm (read: snowmelt) we could see some good spring fishing out here. Think skwalas, BWO’s and maybe march browns.

The Contest:
You and your teammate will fish each wild trout designated section of river over three days.  Go for most fish. The biggest fish. The grand total in inches of fish from all rivers. Or, the total from a single river. Whatever your strategy, it’s a unique challenge and there are great prizes to be awarded in each category.

The grand prize winner will be…
The team that catches the greatest total inches of trout from all five rivers. Their names will be engraved on the beautiful Five Rivers Trophy, permanently displayed at Clearwater Lodge. All teams will receive great tackle items and other prizes.

The rules are simple:

Two person teams, fishing together with a guide. (8 team limit)
Fly fishing only, catch and release, barbless hooks.
Guides measure fish and keep score.
One half-day on each river.
The sixth half-day can be used on any of the 5 rivers.

Where: Clearwater Lodge on the Pit River, Fall River Mills, CA

Cost: $5,000 per team

$500 non-refundable deposit due at time of registration. First payment of $2,000 due February 15, balance of $2,500 due June 1, 2017.
Includes four nights meals and accommodations at Clearwater Lodge, three days of guides, lunches, contest tee shirt, and gift bag. $3,000 of fee is a tax-deductible contribution to California Trout. No refunds after February 1, 2017 unless registered participants find substitute team.

Bucko Theriot reports on 2.9.17

As I am typing this right now, the Upper Sac is currently flowing at 26,700 cfs and is climbing at about 1000 cfs an hour. This river is huge right now and should definitely be avoided, but it is a spectacular site to see! Keep looking forward to spring-time fishing on The Upper Sac and keep dreaming about the big golden and salmon stoneflies in May and June!
