Fishing Report

North Fork Yuba Fly Fishing

Jon Baiocchi / Baiocchi’s Troutfitters Reports on 8.4.2015

Water levels are low and remain about the same as my last report, clouds, and some rain has helped stabilize flows. In the upper reaches of the watershed, water temperatures are 58 at 8am, rising to 64 by early afternoon. Fishing pressure has been light. Fishing with a 3wt. or smaller, is the only way to go here, ditch the 4, and 5; it...

Jon Baiocchi / Baiocchi’s Troutfitters Reports on 7.22.2015

Lance Gray and I are running a Yuba River pontoon drift workshop, It’s about learning how to read the water, control your boat, and gain confidence with your oarsman skills. All aspects will be covered. The workshop date is 9/28.

Water levels continue to fall and it’s getting very skinny in some sections. The good news is there are...

Jon Baiocchi / Baiocchi’s Troutfitters Reports on 7.8.15

The North Fork Yuba River continues to fish well in the mornings and evenings. Canyon water brings out the youth in me, it’s such an awesome time, and it never gets old. Each new canyon section I explore reveals unique plunge pools, and cold springs pumping in 42 degree water. The river is so magnificent, crystal clear, and sexy pocket water...

Jon Baiocchi Reports on 6/27/15

The North Fork Yuba River is fishing extremely well right now, and if you’re a dry fly freak like me you’ll be in heaven. Water levels are low, about what you would see at the end of July. This only concentrates the wild trout in the larger runs and plunge pools. Water temps in the areas that I am guiding on with my guests are starting out at 55 in the early morning,...

North Fork of the Yuba Fly Fishing Report:

A group of us went up to fish the North Fork of the Yuba River. It is one of my favorite places to take beginners and novice anglers. Check out the LCO Guide to Fly Fishing the North Fork Yuba River for more info on fishing the NFYR.

Protip: Campsites 13-15 are far and away our favorite campsites. 14 is the best. The trail down to the river is right in between 13 & 14. Campsites can be reserved here.

Protip: Bears are all over so make sure you keep you campsite clean and all food locked in the bear boxes.

Jon The North Fork Yuba River is firing on all cylinders right now. Fishing is extremely good, and the evenings have been magical. Water temps are ranging from 57-63 degrees depending on your location within the watershed. The best area to concentrate on now is from the Downieville area to Sierra City. The lower river around Rocky Rest is heating up, though...

The North Fork of the Yuba Fly Fishing Report

Fishing conditions are improving, and with the weather forecast calling for increased sunshine and warmer temps, the North Fork Yuba River will be going off in the weeks to come. Water temperatures have bumped up a little and will continue to climb as well. The lower river has been good with warmer water temps in contrast to the upper watershed where the...

Fishing still continues to be awesome on the North Fork Yuba for small wild rainbows. Dry and dry/dropper rigs are producing great results, and you can’t beat this style of fishing because it is so much fun! Water temps have come way down, especially in the upper watershed where they have been running 56.7 to 64.3. Mornings have been cooler as well, and getting...

During August and the “Dog Days” of summer usually means hot conditions, and low water. Every year is different; a great example would be this August where the monsoonal flow pushed far enough north to produce cooler temperatures, thunderstorms, and heavy downpours in Northern California. Location is everything when fishing for trout in the summer sun, whether...

Jon Baiocchi, Baiocchi Outfitters

This past week on the North Fork Yuba River has seen cooler air temperatures, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and lightning. The weather of late has been a saving grace, giving the river a delightful rejuvenation when it needed it the most during a critical time of the season. Fishing still continues to be great for small wild rainbows, and the scenery is as...
