Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

We had a nice two day storm this week that left snow on the high peaks and increased all of the flows in the free stone creeks and rivers. Autumn is in the air and the colors are gorgeous. If you are into leaf peeping, don’t wait too much longer. The prime time is usually mid-month. This looks like a good, colorful autumn ahead. Enjoy!

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Autumn is in the air. The aspens at the higher elevations are in prime plumage with the larger trees along the canyon bottoms poised and ready to begin their color change. If you are into leaf peeping, the prime time is usually mid-month. This looks like a good, colorful autumn ahead. Enjoy!

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

We have definitely turned the corner on summer. Fall is in the air! The morning temperatures in Crowley have been in the lower 30’s. I even had to scrape frost off the windshield before venturing north towards the East Walker. At least for me, the days of wet wading are history. I have been suiting up with long johns, waders, boots,...

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Fall is in the air! The morning and evening temperatures are brisk as the sun angle gets lower in the sky. I am afraid the days of wet wading are about over. I will be packing my waders, boots, and extra clothing from now on. Fishing continues to get better and better as the water cools off. On one of the Crowley Lake tributary...

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Fall is in the air! The morning temperatures are in the low 40’s and the sun angle is low. The grasses and trees are getting a hint of autumn coloration. I have my garlic harvest curing in the garage and there is fruit on the tree outside ready to be plucked for a fresh baked, apple pie. So enter September, an awesome time of the year...

Damn! Adiós August. The smoke has pretty much cleared out and the temperatures are cooling down. The grasses and trees are getting a hint of autumn coloration. So enter September, an awesome time of the year to fish. Trout are getting fidgety in their search for cooler, oxygenated water, not to mention the brown trout are thinking about the autumn spawn. They are...

As we turn the corner on August I am pleased to say that the smokey skies are finally clearing out. It is nice not choking on acrid air. The temperatures are beginning to drop as well and there is a hint of autumn in the air. Hoppers are still cruising around in most of the streams in the Long Valley Caldera which makes for some fun fishing. Casting large, visible...

RIP Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul…..

Hoppers are still cruising around in most of the streams in the Long Valley Caldera which makes for some fun fishing. Casting large, visible  terrestrial patterns to slurping trout is a blast — dry fly fishing at its finest.

Keep an eye out for warm water in our streams. I always carry a thermometer with me this time of year. With...

The skies are still smokey with fires down in the San Joaquin and Yosemite. Generally speaking, the heaviest concentration of smoke has been to the north of Mammoth — the Mono Basin is heinous.

One of the most important tools to throw into your fishing vest now is a thermometer. Do not hesitate to use it. Be aware that as the water temperatures go up, the amount of...

Sierra Nevada

August?!? Really? Already?

Yesterday, the Upper Owens got nuked with lightning, causing a couple brush fires. The fires got dosed immediately by tankers and helicopters but the air is thick with smoke this morning. A big thank you needs to go out to all of the firefighters throughout the West. What a mess….

One of the most important tools to throw into your...
