Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Upper Owens River

The fishing has slowed a little with most of the big bruisers heading back down to the lake (Crowley). Keep in mind that the upper Owens River is open year round above (upstream) the Benton Crossing Bridge. The river is low and clear but fish are lurking throughout the system, just not as many. Most of the fish are hanging out in the slow, deep,...

Upper Owens River

The fishing has slowed a little, especially after the President’s Day Weekend. With anglers flogging and caning the water for several days, the trout are getting wise to the commotion, plus, the larger fish seem to be headed back downstream to the lake. The river is low and clear but fish are lurking throughout the system. Most of the fish are...

Fire and Rain

While Northern California was getting slammed by an “atmospheric river,” the Eastern Sierra got hit hard by a firestorm. On Fridayafternoon, nearly a week ago, a small fire started in Round Valley, just outside of Bishop. During a normal winter season, there would have been snow on the ground and the fire probably would have burned out on its own....

Driest recorded January, ever. Blah. But, relief is on the way? The weather gods are pounding the drums but will this storm track dip to the south into the Sierra? All we can do is cross our fingers and hope. Jeez, we need the precipitation.

Juneuary…. what a dismal month for precipitation. The Mammoth Pass snow pillow is indicating that we are hovering at 18% of normal for this time of year. And, to add insult to injury, we had record high temperatures in Bishop on Sunday, by 5º. Mammoth was 9º warmer that the previous record! However, in spite of the doom and gloom prophecies and reports,...

Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Reoprt

I’ve been fishing the Upper Owens a fair amount for no other reason than there are still some big bruisers swimming around in the river system and it’s fun to hook into some big rainbows for a change. AND, it’s only about 15 minutes from my house. I can sit down to the tying vice in the morning, slurping coffee, and experiment with new patterns or try out some...

June-uary….. we’re back to warm, comfortable temperatures. The afternoons on the Upper Owens are in the 50’s. The big freeze is a thing of the past. Most of the ice has melted or receded making for great conditions. Fishing has been fabulous with huge, porkulent rainbows taking flies if presented down, into the depths.
