Eastern Sierra Fly Fishing Report

Jim Stimson reports on 8.18.2017

I was guiding a client on the East Walker (thank you George) and we were getting into some nice trout right from the get-go. The morning was going well with many fish to hand and a couple of bigger trout lost to the current, the river is still running heavy in many sections. We even had a double hookup, my client and an osprey. While Jim was busy fighting what...

Do you like fishing with hoppers? Who doesn’t like hurling out large dry flies, plopping them onto the water’s surface with not a care in the world for delicate presentations, and then actually being able to see the fly bobbing high along the river’s edge? And the grabs?! Hang on! There is no sippy-slurpy subtleties…. there is chaos as the water explodes when Mr.Trout...

Tioga and Sonora Passes are open, AND, the road down to Devils’s Postpone and the San Joaquin River is open. I fished down there on Monday to scout for a guide trip. A lot of the water is high and fast but if you explore around you can find some softer water and grabby fish. It is a magical place to wander around and explore.

Tioga and Sonora Passes are open, AND, the road down to Devils’s Postpone and the San Joaquin River will open this Friday. I cannot wait to fish and hike down in the canyon. It is a magical place to wander around and explore.

The summer is flying by. It seems like we are over the hump with runoff from the high country. The streams and rivers are still running at full...

Wow! We have almost turned the corner on July…. hard to believe. The summer is flying by.

Tioga and Sonora Passes are open, however, the road down to Devils’s Postpone and the San Joaquin River remains closed and I have not heard of a projected date of opening. Apparently, there is some major damage to the road which is going to delay access. Hopefully we can get...

I hope everybody had a safe and sane 4th of July. We spent the evening drinking beer and wine with friends, feasting on homemade elk sausage, BBQ’d chicken, potato and fruit salads. Then a campfire was lit and we raised our glasses to salute our good fortunes of health, happiness, friends and family as the fireworks lit up the sky above Crowley Lake. Happy Fourth!

Tio...

Tioga Pass opened, finally. Now, if they could get the road open down to Devils’s Postpile and the San Joaquin River, we could get on with summer.

There is a “yuge” amount of water being shuttled about, particularly to the north. The East Walker has blown out to over 1500 cfs, the highest levels in over 15 years. The Twin Lakes Reservoirs are releasing water...

Happy summer! Be careful where you fish. There is wild, raging water everywhere. The West Walker River for example is screaming at nearly 4700 cfs. This is spectacular to witness, but I would wait on the fishing. Everything is flooded and at these levels the river hydraulics are substantial. If you insist on venturing in, always have an escape route or exit planned....

First off, a big congratulations to the Golden State Warriors. Was there any doubt that they would win?

With a cold front that passed through over the weekend, the temperatures have dropped and the runoff has mellowed out. As the next week progresses however, the water will rise again so be careful where you fish. Even at these current “subdued” flows, the river...
