Tioga and Sonora Passes are open, AND, the road down to Devils’s Postpone and the San Joaquin River is open. I fished down there on Monday to scout for a guide trip. A lot of the water is high and fast but if you explore around you can find some softer water and grabby fish. It is a magical place to wander around and explore.

I hope everybody had a safe and sane 4th of July. We spent the evening drinking beer and wine with friends, feasting on homemade elk sausage, BBQ’d chicken, potato and fruit salads. Then a campfire was lit and we raised our glasses to salute our good fortunes of health, happiness, friends and family as the fireworks lit up the sky above Crowley Lake. Happy Fourth!

Tioga Pass opened, finally. Now, if they could get the road open down to Devils’s Postpile and the San Joaquin River, we could get on with summer.

There is a “yuge” amount of water being shuttled about, particularly to the north. The East Walker has blown out to over 1500 cfs, the highest levels in over 15 years. The Twin Lakes Reservoirs are releasing water...

Happy summer! Be careful where you fish. There is wild, raging water everywhere. The West Walker River for example is screaming at nearly 4700 cfs. This is spectacular to witness, but I would wait on the fishing. Everything is flooded and at these levels the river hydraulics are substantial. If you insist on venturing in, always have an escape route or exit planned....
