Lost Coast Outfitters Surf Fly Rod | Golden Gate
OVERVIEW
Fishing our local bays and beaches changed the way we feel about living in the Bay Area. What started as a means to an end became a way of life. We fish more than our friends who live in places people like to call “fishing destinations.”
These rods grew out of that same obsession — born out of necessity since most two-handed rods aren’t built for this kind of fishing. For years, surf anglers have had to make do with rods meant for something else entirely. We wanted a rod that felt at home throwing the gear people already own, while still delivering the advantages of two hands in the surf.
When you’re dealing with migratory fish, timing is everything. Nothing hurts more than breaking a rod mid-season and waiting weeks for repairs. That’s why we built an absurd number of replacement sections. Over-the-counter part replacement shows up fast and keeps you fishing.
Designed from the ground up to chase stripers and perch from the beaches and bays, but versatile enough to be your spey setup or your new favorite rod for pyramid lake.
Frequently asked questions
For both surf and bay fishing, we recommend running the Golden Gate as a shooting head system with interchangeable tips.
Surf & Bay:
Our go-to setup is the RIO Outbound Short Shooting Head Kit (9-weight) paired with a running line. This kit lets you quickly adjust sink rate and depth for changing conditions without swapping your entire line system.
Steelhead:
For swinging flies, the Golden Gate pairs best with a 425-grain Skagit head and T-8 MOW tips. If you prefer a Scandi-style presentation, a 380-grain Scandi head with a 10’ PolyLeader is an excellent alternative.
Pyramid Lake:
For indicator and Indo-rig fishing, we recommend a RIO Switch Chucker #6 with a 10’ Light Float MOW tip. When stripping flies, the same Outbound Short shooting head setup used in the surf works well here too.
The Ocean Beach is built for heavier lines, bigger water, and tougher conditions.
Surf & Bay:
We recommend the RIO Outbound Short Shooting Head Kit (10-weight) paired with a running line. This setup provides the power needed for wind, heavy flies, and strong currents, while allowing you to fine-tune depth on the fly.
Steelhead:
For Skagit fishing, the Ocean Beach shines with a 525-grain Skagit head and T-11 MOW tips. For anglers who prefer Scandi casting, a 440-grain Scandi head is the ideal match.
Pyramid Lake:
The Ocean Beach pairs well with a RIO Switch Chucker #7 and a 10’ Medium Float MOW tip, or a RIO Lake Chucker #7 for a simple, integrated option.
Yes. Both rods are designed around shooting head systems, not full-length fly lines. A dedicated running line improves distance, control, and durability—especially in surf conditions. Our 50 lb in-house running line is what we use exclusively and recommend for all Outbound Short shooting head setups.
Stick with the RIO Outbound Short Shooting Head Kit + running line recommended above. It’s the most forgiving, adaptable setup and the easiest way to get the most out of either rod.
