Lower Sac & Feather Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Ryan Johnston Reports on 5.11.2016

Lower Sac Shad

The shad fishing around Chico has been really good this week. The fish have just started showing up so expect things to get thick and heavy here the next two or three weeks. Go find your favorite shad bar near Chico and you should be able to find some willing fish. Best shad times around Chico is from 4PM to 8PM. Once the light starts getting really low then the bite starts slowing down quite a bite. Right now we are hooking about 40ish fish a night.

Feather River

The Feather season is coming to an end with a couple weeks left for the hard core angler looking for their last steelhead of the season. One day last week we were rewarded with this incredibly rare spring salmon. It is by far the brightest salmon that I have seen this far up the river. I hook about 2-3 of these spring salmon every year and have only landed 5 of them in 14 years of guiding. So I was so stoked to have finally put my hands on this specimen. It’s hard work landing a salmon like this on a size 14 micro mayfly. Sometimes all the stars align and you just get lucky.

Lower Sac Trout

The Lower Sac continues to impress and should continue to fish well for the next month. Expect around mid June for the things to tighten up quite a bit. If you are looking to hook a bunch of fish and get your fill of fighting hard strong rainbows then there is no better place than the Lower Sac.

Currently my openings are:

May 24/25/June 1 (half day trout trips)

June 4 (shad trip)

June 15/16, 22, 24, 30 (all trips open)
