American River Fly Fishing Report

Happy Nguyen reports on May 25th, 2026

The American River shad run is in full force right now, and we’re officially in peak season. If you’ve been thinking about getting out, this is the time to do it. Fish are spread throughout the system and there are plenty of opportunities whether you’re fishing from shore or floating the river.

DIY anglers swinging flies from the bank have been finding success, especially during lower light periods and when covering water methodically. Anglers floating the river are putting up solid numbers fishing under indicators, and the action has been consistent throughout the day.

The hot fly lately has been green Perdigons, both under an indicator and on the swing. Nymphing continues to be the most productive overall technique, especially when getting flies down in the softer seams and travel lanes where shad are stacking up.

If you’re looking to get into fly fishing or sharpen your skills, shad season on the American River is hard to beat. They’re aggressive, plentiful, and one of the most fun fish you can target on a fly rod. Whether you’re a beginner learning line control and fighting fish, or an experienced angler looking for nonstop action, now is the best time to get after them.
