McCloud & Upper Sac Fly Fishing Report

Riley Renick of Wild Waters Fly Fishing reports on May 26th, 2026

McCloud

The McCloud is firing on all cylinders — and the word is out. Fish population in the McCloud this year seems to be very high, especially in the upper river. Water clarity is fantastic. We are seeing some of the best dry fly fishing we have had in years. Mayfly hatches are sporadic throughout the day, and we’re right at the start of the main event — the golden stone hatch. A few of the big bugs are around, and fish are starting to show some interest in the big Chubby.

Last night, on a double dry fly rig with a Chubby and a size 16 mayfly, the fish were 50/50, so there’s lots of opportunity here. So far, we have been seeing lots of cookie-cutter sized fish, with the occasional big brown mixed in. With the stonefly hatch just getting going, and migratory lake fish still yet to move into the river, there is a lot to be excited about on the McCloud this year.

Upper Sac

The Upper Sac is in prime condition as well. At 475 cfs, the whole river will fish well from Delta to the dam. These fish are also looking up at mayflies and stoneflies. As the temperature warms up, focus on the early morning and evening for the best dry fly opportunity. We may only have a few more weeks left where the lower river is really in before things start to heat up. Now is a great time to take advantage of the entire river.
