Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Arrow Thin Left Icon

Matt Koles reports on 8.27.2017

Cool nights, warms days, late summer fishing on the Truckee River.

Fishing is pretty good. Lots of small fish with an occasional big. The best time to fish is 9-11:30. Seems like that’s when we connect. Probably the window when the the trouts and the bugs are moving around the most. It’s gonna get hot again this week, and mornings and evenings will be your best bet. Soon, when it cools down more, we’ll get an all day grab type thing going. For now, it’s still summer, but fall is just around the corner.

Crayfish, and nocturnal stones are making up a huge part to the fish’s diet so obviously have something on that resembles either/or.

I’ll be back to guiding Thurs-Sundays now as the wife is back teaching and I’ll be watching the minions. My fall is filling up so please call if you’re looking to fish.

The Tight Line Clinic for the 2nd is full, I opened one up for the 3’rd now as well and have a few spots for that. The one on the 7th is still wide open.

Speaking of tight line nymphing, remember keep it simple. It’s suppose to be simple. I’ve seen some wacky tight line rigs this summer that people have come up with from the internet, or on their own. While they work, most of them don’t work well here. The tight line classes will teach you proper knots and connections and most all, simplicity.
