Truckee River Fly Fishing Report

Truckee RiverSep 6, 20181 min read

Matt Koles reports on 9.6.18

Summer is gone on the Truckee River, and fall fishing now.

Kids are in school, the burners are done, the last party of summer. Time to get serious with some fall fishing.

We’ll pretty much have an empty river now except for some weekends. I’m guessing the flows will stay up out of Lake Tahoe this fall, but hard to say. Regardless, I think flows will be good for the next 3 months or so.

For now it’s still crayfish, stones and mostly smaller mayflies/ nymphing wise. Tight line nymphing, and dry dropper combos have been the best. The streamer bite is picking up also. Just a great time to be fishing the Truckee River from about now until it gets really cold. When it gets cold the Nevada side of the Truckee River is the best option. I’ll be down there about 75 percent of the time now until late spring next year anyways. Big fat trouts.

if you get out early it’s cold now, especially down the the river below Hirschdale. Bring yourself some warm clothes.

So get on it, we get some nice and fish and have quality fishing in the fall.
