Please don’t hate on me for giving a report on the Little Truckee River. I usually don’t, but since the Truckee River is flowing at about the same rate as the LT in spots, why not, and please, it’s not like it’s any kind of a secret spot.
Fall is the time to fish dries on the LT if you’re into that type of thing. Flows are at a perfect 40 cfs, normal for this time of year out there, and perfect for fish looking up. Cloudy days is when you want to string up the old dry fly rod. Sunny days can be difficult still, but in a few weeks you will see Blue Wing Olives hatching mid-day regardless of weather. Right now there is splattering of blue wings and the very hard to fish with Pseudocloeon, or tiny Blue Wing Olive. When fish are on the Pseudo’s it can be a frustrating day out there. Small flies will rule if they are, RS2′s, WD-40′s and tiny beatis patterns for the dry. I have some patterns at Mountain Hardware in town that work too. Most fish on the LT like shit stuck in the film. I still fish with 5x regardless, just because that’s me, but you may go down to 6x, or 7x if they won’t eat. I love guiding folks on the Truckee, but guiding dries in that spring creek environment on the LT rules.
Pyramid Lake in Nevada is about to open on October 1st. That’s very soon. We are suppose to get a little weather this week in the greater Truckee-Tahoe-Reno area and that’s always good early in the fall to get the big cutty’s on the bite. Stay tuned.
