Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Insert “Oh how the times have changed” quote here. It’s been a while since our last report and man have they changed.
As
many of you know by now, the Truckee river has had a 24hr Hoot Owl
Closer in effect for at least the last two to three weeks. Long story
short, this is a temporary, voluntary closer if you’re not familiar.
A
month ago we were told that the Truckee was on the short list for an
emergency closer issued by F&W at some point this summer. This time
is now. It looks like starting next week the Truckee will legally be
closed to all fishing. This is great news for our resident wild trout,
they will need all the help they can get to make it through tough times.

Now
lets get to the good stuff. Don’t let the smallmouth bass picture fool
you, there is still plenty of trout fishing going on in the greater
Truckee area. You just have to look a little harder now-a-days. We do
have some lake and small stream options available to our guests that are
a bit more under the radar. But don’t get me wrong, man our Smallies
are fun!
Sawmill Lake (Private)- Sawmill
continues to pump out solid rainbows and a hand full of nice browns. If
you like sight fishing to cruising fish, bonefish style, this is the
game for you. Stripping small nymphs and your normal summer dries have
done the trick.
Fly Fishing School- Our ponds
are still firing and we’re getting in to fish in every class. If you’re
a beginner or intermediate angler, be sure to check out our extensive
list of class options.
