Truckee River Fly Fishing Report
Matt Gilligan Koles Reports on 7.5.2016
Very good consistent fishing here on the Truckee River. A bit of a heat wave for us here in, Tahoe/Truckee/Reno. We’ve been in the low 90’s a few days this week here in the Hirsch.
The fishing is good to very good despite the heat. Nice cool mornings, hot afternoons. So if you get out in the morning, fish until about mid-day, you’ll be good. Water temps are perfect for trout right now. We’ve been tight line nymphing in the pocket water and doing well. Fish are sucked down in the fast oxygenated water. It’s really a fun time to break the river down and look for slots in the pocket water and punch fish out of them. Trouts are munching on caddis, crayfish, stones, and pmds. Fish aren’t all that selective in fast water. Anything with some dubbing and a bead should catch a fish. Fish heavier tippet and you won’t get your shit broken off. I will have a tight line nymphing clinic posted today. Breaking down the river this time of ain’t easy. Remember, a few anglers catch fish, most don’t.
The fish are in the type of water that most people walk by right now..
The whole river is up from Lake Tahoe through Nevada. Flows are coming out of the lake for the 4th weekend and the rafting season up there. Fish should be moving all around and the upper stuff could actually be fishing this week. Sometimes the fishing right in the town of Truckee can be pretty good.
