Jim Andras Reports on 1.4.2018

Happy New Year from Southern Oregon! My son and I capped off 2017 with a New Year’s Eve float on the upper Rogue. At only 8, he came along as a fly fisher in a big way this year. After swearing off steelhead this summer to focus on bass, it took some serious persuasion to get him off the pond and back on the river. On Halloween, he hooked a steelhead on his first cast and finished the morning with three in the net. Last Sunday, his streak continued with more success including this wild buck. On the ride home, he replayed in detail how well the fish fought, how he landed it without my help and emphasized that he hooked more than I did. I could not be more proud of him.

The dry winter has kept good numbers of late summer fish in the Rogue and out of the tribs. We experienced similar conditions in 2014 & 2015 and the river fished really well. Thus far the winter of 2018 is off to a good start on the Rogue and current conditions should keep it that way into April. Thank you for your interest.
