Lower Sacramento Fly Fishing Report

Lower Sacramento RiverJan 4, 20181 min read

Ryan Johnston reports on 1.4.2018

The Sac continues to fish well this winter in a different and unusual way. Generally speaking this time of year we fish the Sundial Bridge float almost daily. However with the pressure from boats and the lack of weather the fishing up there has been average at best. Now with me saying that there is weather rolling in as I write. This little dose of rain that we are about to get is going to help a lot of things from happier trout on the Lower Sac to coastal steelhead.

For those of you that want to get in on some late winter steelhead fishing in the valley there are still quite a few chunky steelhead hanging out in the middle parts of the Sac. The last 3 weeks I have been spending the majority of my time in the Anderson and Cottonwood areas on the Sac having good trout fishing and catching 5-10 steelhead as an added bonus. In 15 years of guiding I don’t remember a winter like this one as the weather is warm, there is consistent winter steelhead fishing, and the PMDs are trying to come off 3 months early :).

For those of you looking to get out in the next few weeks then I have January 8, 15, 20, 22-25, 27, 29, and Feb 2-3 open. We have good fishing on the Lower Sac to look forward to and hopefully some coastal steelheading soon.
